Simply because it is an amazing country. If you’ve lived in the United States for any length of time, you’ll understand why people across the world come here to study, work, raise their families, and lead happy, successful lives.I came here to pursue my PhD in Biological Sciences at Purdue University. I was never someone who could spend 14+ hours a day scrapping and slaving away, memorizing textbooks to get into premier Indian institutes like IIT or BITS. I wanted the freedom to learn what I was interested in, to put my mind to work on things I believed myself most suited for, and at the same time have a balanced life with time for friends, travel, and solid relationships. The United States has given me that and so much more. My tuition is paid for, I’m given a stipend to teach undergraduates Anatomy and Physiology, I’m allowed time off to travel to any part of the country that interests me. I’m allowed to play with cutting-edge technology, equipment worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, in the hope that something I do leads to a cure for breast cancer. The people are wonderful. They’ve challenged and changed my perspectives. I came here expecting to be profiled, marginalized, and occasionally face racism. It hasn’t happened to me once in four years of living here — and even if it does right after I finish typing this answer, it cannot take away from how welcoming, kind, and helpful the people of Indiana — and the US at large — have been to me.My brother came here five years before me and received his Masters from a premier private engineering college. At the time, we were in a desperate financial situation but he received a full scholarship and support from his university; and upon graduating, landed a job with a renowned engine company. He is now happily settled in Indianapolis with his beautiful wife (also from India, also a graduate from an American university, and also landed a great job in an American pharma company), goldendoodle puppy, and lovely suburban house. This is the story of thousands of foreign students who come to the United States with shallow pockets and a dream. We complain endlessly about how much we miss our homes, our countries, and our families, but deep down we know we are lucky to be here and we aim to make the most of it.To the citizens of the US, I can only say this — thank you for making this Indian man feel like he has found a second home. I love you and your country.
當(dāng)時,我們的經(jīng)濟(jì)狀況非常糟糕,但他得到了全額獎學(xué)金和大學(xué)的資助;
My belief is that America itself is an amazing country except for the occasional incidents of racism and whatnot. However, though it seems that the majority of Americans are friendly people they also lack a wider view of the world, hence the stereotypical ignorant yankee that every country hates.
Having lived all over the world, and currently an expat living in the Philippines, I have found people in the majority of the places I live usually know a lot about the USA, but don’t really have much knowledge about other countries unless those countries are a neighbor.
Because it dropped the atomic bombs on Japan. Why? Since my ancestors lived under Japan’s brutal occupation, the A-bombs were the fastest way to end their misery. If America postponed or canceled using them, Japan would’ve killed even more innocent civilians. We always think about how many people the bombs killed, but do we think about how many people the bombs saved? Estimates show that more were saved by the bombsSince this answer is pretty short and since I’m expecting hostile comments, let me present some common arguments and my counterpoints.“All killing is bad. There are no saints in wars.” No, there are saints in wars. Those saints are soldiers stopping Japan from looting their homes and raping their women. What a terrible comparison.“Japan was going to surrender so the A-bombs were unnecessary.” Do you know how long it will take them to surrender, if they ever will? Do you know how many more innocent people they’ll kill in the meantime? Thank goodness America wasn’t willing to find out. And Japanese hardliners even attempted an coup to stop the surrender: Kyūjō incident“But the A-bomb victims were as innocent as your ancestors.” Not quite, those cities had military assets and civilians were warned to evacuate. And since Japan invaded, I rather see a thousand Japanese die than a single American, Chinese, Korean, etc. die. And few Americans died dropping the bombs (only 12 POWs)- mission accomplished!“You are a hypocrite.” There is nothing hypocritical about self-defense.“You are delusional if you think America dropped two nukes in civilian cities in Japan to save their people.” So why else did they drop it? For fun?“Nothing can justify dropping an atom bomb on innocent people. Period.” If only life is as simple as black-and-white. Again, those cities had military assets and civilians were warned to evacuate. Also, saying “Period” doesn’t make you sound any smarter or more correct, only more self-righteous.
Triggered. You won. Here we go.I live in Europe. I live in Barcelona, Spain. Yes, that’s correct. I LEFT America to move to Europe. In fact, I’m half American, half Australian. My mother is American Indian and my Australian family are European immigrants. I’m a world sample within myself.I’ve travelled to 30 countries. I’ve lived in California, New York City, Texas, and Las Vegas. I’ve had a decent sample of the United States as well. Growing up with a young and divorce and later successful family, I’ve also lived at various economic levels. There is one thing I have found back home in America that I have yet to find to this certain degree elsewhere: ruthless determination, individuality, and freedom to act on it.I was at a bar in my new home of Barcelona, Spain a few weeks ago. My Spanish friend group was waiting for me. One of them grabbed my arm as soon as I walked thought the door and pulled me over to another presumably Spanish man and introduced me. He spoke in English and said he now lives in Miami. He was just visiting his home in Barcelona. I asked why he moved out to Miami and left behind beautiful Barcelona. “Because I needed to be around American drive and focus. I like the way you think and act on it.”It made me realize what makes me American, what I love about my country, and why the world still keeps its eyes on us despite how much others talk about how much they dislike us from their iPhone 8′s….
I had my teen years in Portugal and adulthood in San Jose/San Francisco, I’ve currently been 3 years in Bangkok, Thailand, working for myself, from home. The reason I ‘left’ the US was because everyone around me was so driven and focused (to use your words) on building the next Facebook or Twitter or whatnot, and I didn’t feel they enjoyed the simpler things in life. Thais, contrasted to other South/East Asian countries (and maybe southern europeans are similar), do not have this drive, and I kinda enjoy it, for the most part they’re content where they are, and do not have this ‘greed’ (in the good sense of the word). OTOH, of course there’s times when you can get frustrated with this as well, so it’s a give and take. I left the US because it was too much of it, but I appreciate it still for instilling in me those same values that allowed me to build a business that allowed me to travel the world.
I was not born in the US, and I do not come from any other country.I was born in a UN refugee camp, after most of my family were rounded up and killed solely because of their religion and nationality in ‘enlightened’ Europe. I was legally ‘stateless’ as is stated in my immigration documents. My parents (sadly gone) brought me to the US as a child, for which I thank them and god every day.I became a naturalized US citizen, received a fine education (kicking and screaming), served in the US armed forces. In the Army we were all the same color, olive drab (camo had not yet been invented).Because of the opportunities here, I have been professionally and financially successful.I co-founded two companies which employed over 1,000 people, and never asked the permission of any government agency to do so. I did have to convince investors and customers. Also work my fanny off.I have worked with talented people of every race, national origin, religion and preference, and no one cared about where any of us were from, only about what we could do.I remember at one such design meeting, looking around the table and thinking that there were still parts of the world where our cousins might be trying to kill each other. All we cared about was ‘can you code’.We are not perfect, but are more open about our flaws than anywhere else I have seen, and our national conversation is generally bout ‘how can we be better’.Yakov Smirnoff (expat Russian comic), years ago, after he was naturalized said it perfectly.“ You can go to Italy, but you cannot become Italian. You can go to France, but you cannot become French. You can come to America and become an American. “I cannot improve on that, only try to live up to it.Added Jan. 9, 2018:I thank the community for the upvotes and kind comments and feel compelled to add:Neither I nor anyone else does this by themselves. The unique culture of the US enables class mobility and has made it possible for people from many backgrounds and cultures to succeed here. While not perfect, no place I have seen accepts differences as well as the US, and moves as quickly to ’show me what you can do’.In many places, innovation, and innovators are viewed as disruptors, and a threat to the established order, classes, and companies. In the US it is viewed as an opportunity. The business infrastructure of the US is also a great facilitator, starting with a relative lack of governmental interference, which translates to less corruption, and to not directing business opportunities to the ‘right’ people and companies.Governments, even the US government, are not good at this and their occasional attempts to ‘pick the winner’ are usually disastrous. It extends to a financial and capital market that is friendly to innovation, and will fund a good idea. Please do not tell VC’s that I speak well of them, we have a relationship to maintain.Intellectual property is well protected in our legal system, so that big companies cannot simply poach new ideas.Customers, even large companies are willing to take a chance on a start up, if the idea or product solves a real problem. This presents an enormous domestic market for new ideas. It is the norm in the US for a new company to offer equity to employees, so that all will share in the success of the company. In my companies, everyone, from the most senior, to the receptionist, had an equity stake in the company, it is a great motivator.Because of the proven rewards of being early in a successful company, many senior and talented people are willing to join a start up, instead of the safe bet of a large established company. While some other places have some of these attributes, none have all of them except the US, and certainly not on this scale. In my experience, Israel is the closest but is 1/60 our size. Australia is a contender, but is remote, and 1/10 our size. The UK is working the problem, and getting there, but not there yet.If you list the most successful companies and families today, 25 years ago, 50 years ago, 75 years ago, in the US you will find very few on more than one list. In Europe or Japan you could simply copy the list for the last 300 years.Pacific Rim economies are too soon to tell.
Harold, with people like you becoming a success given all you had to overcome, you are an inspiration to anyone. I am glad you are a citizen of the U.S.A.
Thank you for the kind words.I always thank all of the other citizens of this country, who created the conditions, and culture, that allow people to do the best they they can, and reap the rewards of their efforts.

Because it serves as what it was meant to be.
Land of freedom and liberty.
With all the anti American talks around the world and the negativity being spread by the media, I thought ill of the country too.
After visiting it for the first time I see where the money earned is being spent. I have travelled around Asia and Europe and I haven't met people with such a chill mind anywhere else so far. I love how people talk here and operate in life.
I thought about the following before and after visiting the United States.
1-
Before : America stole oil from the Middle East.
Now : Saudies couldn't drill oil without American help nor anyone else looks like they can work on it. Americans are just a collective force of smart people from all around the world who make such resources accessible to the world.
2-
Before : America had their Cold War with soviets.
Now : America is not an expantionist country, it did not change the culture of South Korea and Other capitalist states US helped (nor did they took over it) unlike soviet who didn't allow central Asian countries to read the Quran.
3-
Before : Dollar is dominating the world.
Now : Please let me and also Americans know if you have a better idea ? The goal is not to make dollar influential but trade among each other without problems.
4-
Before : Americans are stupid and don't know anything about the world.
Now : They're too smart to portray their dumb image because they're smart. See what they did there ? Why would Silicon Valley exist in America if they were dumb. All the smart people from around the world go there to work.
5 :
Before : Americans are responsible for the fighting in the world and sell arms and weapons to everyone.
Now : America is one country but not one tribe who believe in one thing. It's the most diverse place on earth with the most diverse set of ideas from everyone. Everyone is still a human being. It cannot be so easy to control each and every thing.
6 -
Before : America is ruled by burgeosies, the rich elite.
Now : Who ever is ruling, worked for it. Maybe his father or great grand father. People worked for it and got there. It's a capitalistic world and you should do the same. It's a race and winners deserve what they have.
7 -
Before : They went to Afghanistan to steal lithium to make batteries
Before : I don't think Afghanistan has anyone like Elon Musk who would make a better use out of it. In the end of the day. Technology will be used for everyone.
8 -
Before : America is dominated by white people and they're racist.
Now : Please visit Europe especially Eastern Europe and tell me who's racist.
9 -
Before : Police is shooting people around.
Now : Not once did I see any police brutality in the United States.
10 -
Before : They're spying on us.
Now : If that prevents me from dying from a bomb blast, I really don't care. I want them to spy on me for as long as they like if that's the price I pay for being alive.
11-
Before : People use such easy language.
Now : It's a short life and maybe it's a good idea to not stress myself with all the heavy vocabulary and just take it easy.
12-
Before : If they're conquering around the world they must be rude and filthy.
Now : I haven't met better people yet than Americans. I have been all around Europe and many countries in Asia and people don't seem to be as helpful as Americans are. Also talkative. People in other places don't talk much.
I am yet to discover and learn more. I'm trying to have an optimistic point of view for both America and the rest of the world. I still have a lot to learn and I don't think that I know everything.

As an American who’s traveled and lived for the past 13 years abroad, I would say #4 is less about intelligence, and more about mindset. For example, Americans and American business try to not only cater to the big things, but the little things as well. Every time I have gotten a new car or new long term rental from local vendors in foreign countries there has been little to no gas in the car.Compare that to an American or American based vendor/company who will make sure the care is fully gassed up and the car is washed and detailed before giving it to you.We care about the little details almost as much as the main purchase.
