This is a good and tricky question.
It does not ask “which three countries did you like most?” We are to deal with the important issue of “never tire of, irrespective of how many times you visit.” So we are searching for three countries whose gifts are so inexhaustible, that a human lifetime does not suffice to capture.
So size is important. Japan and New Zealand, for example, two countries that come up on many lists, although extraordinary and full of wonders, are in the end small countries. And even though the magnificent Japanese culture may be inexhaustible, and can never be completely captured with multiple visits, the natural beauty and extent of the country can, because it is small.
Natural and cultural diversity is also important. The widest the range of different landscapes, and the wealthier the history and culture(s) of a country, the more time, effort and energy is required to unveil its hidden treasures.
Having in mind the above, here’s my list of the three most inexhaustible countries in order of inexhaustibility:

If this list were to expand, I would include India. Again, the size of the country is misleading. The diversity of culture, environment and terrain is incredible. Again, many of the world’s major religions are included: Hindus, Musli..., Christians, Jains, Zoroastrians and Buddhists. What is remarkable about India—as well as Indonesia and China on the list above—is that it is as if space is turned inside out. What I mean is that the farther in you travel, the greater the space expands, so the country is bigger than it seems. To explain: it may take a few hours to travel by air to a city, an hour or two to traverse a city, an hour or two to get to a smaller town, an hour or two to get to an outlying village near that town, an hour or two to get a little farther to the next village. It takes longer and longer to travel and within each of those journeys are amazing treasures and experiences.
I agree, Stewart. Not easy to pick the top 3, but surely India is up there in the top too. The only issue with India is that it is not a travel destination for everybody, and multiple visits may be demanding for many.
What's misleading about its size? It's a pretty damn big country. As in within the top 10. With all the places higher than it not on this list falling into the “most of it is uninhabited wilderness” clause.
I apologize for being unclear. I shall have to work out a better way to explain the concept. I did not intend to say that India was a small country, but rather that the experience of India makes it even larger than it already is geographically. To take a smaller example, it is as if you entered a small house and after months of exploring realized that on the inside it was enormous. Even so, after leaving, you look back and the house is still a small one on the outside. When marking a map of my travels, I do not shade in entire countries, but actually trace a line of the places I have actually been. My travels in India then look remarkably insignificant, but, due to the “inside is bigger than it looks” concept, I cannot say that I have travelled and seen and experienced a great deal within those confines.
If there’s a couple of things I like in this world, one is a well structured, well written reply, and two, a reply full of information that is new to me. Bravo! I shall subscribe.
Agreed on no. 1 and 3. But I’m afraid with regards to China, one can get tired of visiting after a few days, let alone a lifetime. Lately the internet and media censorship is obscene (big crackdown on VPNs as well), lack of freedom of expression, an anti-foreigner climate brewing (primarily from the government) plus the occasional “off the index” air pollution (not to mention water and food pollution) make China far less desirable as a destination.
10 years ago when I didn’t know China, I’d have answered like you though :)
China is very diverse. Don’t forget it includes Ti..., and the greater part of the Silk Roads – themselves inexhaustible. After traveling for 6 months in China, I feel I have only scratched the surface.

I certainly have to agree with you about Indonesia being number one. Over many visits from 1985 to 2017 < I have spent just over 5 years there. Not working, but as a backpacker. I’ve visited about 45 of the islands, but spent the greatest amount of time on Sumatra and it outlying islands. India would be my second choice, For the third choice, I am undecided. Thanks to you Nicos for the opportunity to reply to such a well crafted answer. One could easily fill an encyclopaedia in reply to the question posed. Regards
As someone who lives in Europe, it's just mesmerizing event to think of size and diversity of these three countries.
This answer contains the exact magic mixture of describing and naming your reasons for picking these three in the first place.
Great work Nicos! Keep it up!
This was an exceptional and well-assembled answer.
It is evident that you are well familiar with the subject.
Your opening sentence (style of writing) grabbed my interest and made me want to continue reading. As someone who is widely interested in history and traveling and looking forward to exploring the vastness of East Asia, I have to say this answer was very informative and helpful.
In my opinion, the most interesting part is your way of describing the unbeliveable diversity of China and Indonesia in cultural, ethnic, historical, regional and many other areas.
I am looking forward to reading others of your answers and articles.
What I like about this answer is that your point and choice of countries are straight forward and they address the main dilemma of the question- the three most inexhaustible countries. Your discussion of an issue related to this topic, external sources and explanation of term “infinite microcosmos” are extraordinary too!
I am suited to answer this question since I love to travel and have been to a few countries as well. Having said that, this is a very subjective question. But these three regionns of the world have a lot to offer culturally, naturally, and are still safe for Westerners. My picks are Peru or Bolivia, Namibia or South Africa, and India even though it’s crowded.
Excellent choices, Nicos - agree with you entirely. Another reason for Indonesia being no. 1 is the incredible warmth and politeness of the people, no matter which area or ethnic group you visit - probably the most joyful place in the world!

Thanks for this, Vivek. I refrained from commenting on the character of the people, because my answer would have been three times the current size! I LOVE the Indonesian people. I couldn’t agree more with your comment that their warmth and politeness are unique, NO MATTER WHICH AREA OR ETHNIC GROUP YOU VISIT! This latter, was one of the biggest surprises of my Indonesia experience. Whether in Java, Bali, Sulawesi, Ternate, Tidore, Irian Jaya, whether Muslim, Hindu or Christian, the Indonesians are one of the most friendly and hospitable people on the planet. And joyfull too, … even in their funerals!
I think a fair choice, but man there are so many great countries. Hmmm perhaps India could make the cut…Im From NZ and I agree with your approach that size has to be an important consideration simply to help cram in more diversity.
India goes on that list!!
YOu should write your own answer, the more the better!
You I believe have not uated India in terms of its vastness and diverse differences every 200 Kms… talk about anything and It will take not few visits but a few decades fulltime to understand and know India…check it out….vast lands still unexplored….it' a world in itself..

I think that I’d approach from the opposite direction and start with the countries that I wouldn’t step into with someone else’s foot. That would include the USA, India, Australia, most Balkan countries a lot of Africa and South America, and South East Asia (not including China). I was born in England, but visiting there borders on the painful.
On the positive side, I’ve not visited as many countries as some travellers, but I’m in double figures. Japan has enough to keep me interested for a life time, New Zealand is somewhere that I’ve always wanted to spend time in but never had the opportunity. I moved to Canada over half a lifetime ago and I never tire of its landscape, its people, its seasons and its generosity.
so much agree, my self already visited 92 countries worldwide and im Indonesian who is living in Dubai currently. as my experience no countries par with Indonesia in term of diversity in whole things. we are having 34 provinces, each province will have their own language, food, traditional dance, traditional clothes, culture, art, building structure. not to mention that each province will have at least 5–30 cities and each city have uniqueness. interesting fact, if you visit other city in Indonesia even we are 1 country sometime we cant understand each other due to barrier of the language thats why we speak Bahasa Indonesia. in the middle of 300 languages in Indonesia, bahasa Indonesia its a unity language for us as same as English for the world. mostly Indonesian are polyglot, my self speaking lembak (my mom language), palembang, malayan, bengkulu, java, Bahasa Indonesia, English, Deutchland and Arab with emirati accent so i speak 9 languages and im learning mandarin and turkish. that only about the languages.
Loved your answer but I didn’t interpret the criteria in the same way. There are places I can go that I don’t think I would ever tire of visiting, even if it is the same thing every time I visit. Meanwhile, as much as I love my host country, China, and as many incredible travel-worthy sites as exist here that I’ve yet to visit, I find China to be exhausting! For me it’s not the number of places a country offers that has me going back. It’s the places that reinvigorate me every time I go.
