Grow wings real quick!
Actually, you’ve gotten yourself into a real pickle this time. Just whatdid you do to piss them off anyway? Well, I guess it doesn’t matter, you’renot gonna talk your way out of this one.
OK, First: Don’t panic. Oh, too late for that eh?
If possible, zig-zag often, elephants are not known to be nimble. You may stay ahead of them that way, although a whole herd…that’s some ground to cover.
Your best chance is running downhill if available. Elephants will charge uphill with no problem, but they have a hell of a time controlling their body weight on a downslope. Be looking for that.
Elephants have an excellent sense of smell, but they don’t see too good.
Hit the tall grass and if possible, throw your hat or your shirt high up and away,
they may be distracted by that and go after it while you hunch over and continue running in the opposite direction.
Look for any large obxts that you can get behind or get between you and the remaining pachyderm. Chances are, that would only be a tree or a rock.
If large trees are in the area, for sure head to one and don’t even slow down when you get there. Just bolt right up like you were wily coyote and hang on for dear life. Elephants just never did get the knack for climbing trees. Now, of course it has to be a big tree. (Obviously)
last resort is just play dead and hope there’s enough of you left after they are done tossing you around to be worth reassembling.
Good Luck!
No one would have done better than this Thai man in Thailand… He humbly apologized with a wai (traditional gesture) when he found out that his bike angered this herd of Jumbos in Khao Yai National Park, Thailand.
… and he survived!

He was among the fortunate few who came face-to-face with the jumbos and escaped unscathed, while many cars have been damaged and some curious ones who came out of the vehicles to snap the photos- killed.
Do not get out of the car!
Please learn the gesture of ‘Thai wai’ when visiting Thailand…
I can't imagine anyone believing this. Indicating submission by making yourself appear smaller - slightly more believable. You could as well say that he offered his hand and the elephant understood it and shook his hand. That is as dangerous advice.
This is an unprecedented, and the first of its kind- it happened and surprised everyone in my country
Yes, but self-deprecating DOES work in many cases. And as I said, elephants are smart. I believe they perceived that in him.
In Thailand, a Wai usually only works with the 4 legged animals. For the two-legged variety, one might need to break open his or her wallet.
Moped Rider Begs for Mercy as Angry Elephants Charge at him in Thailand
Here is one lix! It seems that the elephants realized that the man is harmless to the baby elephants!
Thai elephants are polite. Try that with African elephants, and no prayer will save you.
Knowing how intelligent elephants are they probably correctly deciphered his gesture as an apology or as humility.
It was reported that during the Covid, the National Park is under siege… Any human seen by the jumbos will be treated as an invader, and more Wais are expected….Scary!

interesting discussion so far; I have no problem with the theory that elephants can recognise friendliness from agressive behaviour, just like we humans, I can look at a stranger and form an opinion whether this person is friendly towards me or not, and then wait for the outcome.
There is so such out there in nature we still do not fully comprehend, more so that we humans still do not understand each other…….what a wonderful world it would be if we could all understand each other?
In all seriousness, if you see an elephant, drop to the floor and start acting like you’re having a seizure, small things moving startles elephants and makes them run away for some reason.
From a African Elephant perspective. Animals primarily follow smell. If you run downwind (the wind blowing on your back) the possibility exist that you might survive. Maybe, as elephants move faster than you could through the savanna. They would only be mad if they feel endangered and the herd would have youngsters in it as bull elephants are more solitary. They would stop as soon as they do not feel threatened anymore but let me assure you, elephants move very quickly and silently through the bush if they want to.
Climbing either up or down a steep high cliff would be a good start. You sure as hell aren’t going to out run an elephant. They are a lot faster than you.
Taking a boat out into the middle of a deep lake is another way to escape them, and then you can sit there and wait for them to calm down and leave.
It is probably better to not piss the elephants off in the first place, because I don’t think that you would make the first 100 meters. Elephants can run 35 MPH and you can’t.
I don't know. They can roll cars, so getting in the car doesn't guarantee safety. If you climb a tree, they can shake trees. If you go into the water, they're not afraid of that. If you go into a cave, a leopard might live there. Maybe jump on a helicopter, if there happens to be one, (with a pilot). Go into the nearest secure building, if there is one. I just don't know. Best plan: Try not to p*ss them off, in the first place.

Figure out why they’re pissed off at you and apologize. Quickly. Very quickly.

Dont piss them off in the 1st place
Your question lacks information
Where are you
What is your surroundings, like hills, trees, ditches, water etc…
Do you have weapons
Do you have a vehicle
Stop, turn around and bow. Show the majestic and intelligent creatures respect and love. And maybe they will treat you the same way back.

Find a tree or a rift in the earth (ditch/gulley/a depression) and pray. You can't go right or left or into a hot air balloon. You just find something and hope.
Hope there’s a tree you can climb. Otherwise, you will have stand your ground or find a way to put a lion herd or hippos between you & them.

Honestly your best bet if there's no where to escape like a rocky crag or something is to stand still, wave your arms around and shout.
It's best to lay down flat and hope they don't step on you.
