The way I saw it explained (in a YouTube video, no less), which helped, was via an analogy:
You can make a mark on wood by scratching it with glass. So glass is harder than wood.
However, you can break a glass window by hitting it with a wooden baseball bat. So glass is more brittle than wood.

There is a great misunderstanding between harness and toughness. Diamonds are very hard, but they're not very tough, meaning they cannot absorb a lot of energy before fracture. Contrast that to ballistic fibers which are considerably more tough, and enhanced moreso by the weave of the fabric, allowing for even more energy absorption. First, diamond is not a metal. It is crystallized carbon.
Second, you are misunderstanding the concept of “hardness”. It merely means the ability to cut or scratch other materials. Diamond can cut all other known substances, thus it is the “hardest” natural material known.
