‘Fake socialite’ lives 21 days for free in Beijing as social experiment
An art student from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing did an experiment for her graduation project - to attempt to live 21 days for free in Beijing. She disguised herself as a socialite and slept in the halls of extravagant hotels, tried on jade bracelets at auctions, and enjoyed free food and drinks. Her 21-day project caused a sensation online, triggering heated discussion about class, privilege, and wealth inequality.

Whatever people say... she showed the world ONCE again a known reality.
We should also take into account that she perfectly fits Chinese beauty standards. Pretty privilege combined with class privilege is a powerful combo to make people treat you with extra kindness and temperance.
true, she's pretty and knows how to do make up that fits chinese beauty standard

Exactly I think this plays a bigger role tbh, like you could look average/below average and this would never work
For real she's so pretty
What do you mean? There is no standards. It is only her doing perfect makeup that's it. Nothing more. Don't try to fit that into standards, everyone has different makeup and styles. Don't generalize, hard to define standards
She made it looks so easy to fake these things. In reality it's really difficult to mimic the attitude of "high class" people, especially when you don't have enough confidence. And the fact that she only got questioned one time made me think she must have presented herself in such a charismatic way that people don't doubt her. To be honest this is almost to a scary degree, she'll make a great spy or con-woman.
Yes true I come from lower income family and the lack that I realize between lower income and high class, other than the money obviously, is the lack of confidence. Most lower income people have inferiority trait especially when they are in totally different places like extravagant and lavish venue. Me, myself, I will feel very awkward there because of my lack of confidence

Very true. I get cold feet even to enter a hi-end showroom feeling judged by every pair of eye. On the other hand, we all know that many wealthy people showing off their wealth could be under huge debts yet they will have their confidence with them all the way.
Not a lot of people can do this, she's really brave
ever heard of the guy from "Catch me if you can?"
She really did a great job in acting like one of the rich people. Even i would believe that she's one if i were to see her in person.
You would believe she's a socialite if you see her sleeping in a hotel lobby?? If I saw that I would immediately know something is up.

i can't even walk into a shop without acting like i did some crime ??? this woman's confidence is incredible
“It’s very interesting how such free ‘excessive goods’ are distributed: They’re often given to people who seem to already have plenty,” Zou wrote on Weibo.' Man I love her LOL, this is a very valid social commentary
She's like an real life actress. Salute to her bravery while doing this experiment. It's sad to say that the society are favoring rich-looking people.
Don't forget that she's got the so-called 'BEAUTY PRIVILEGES' going on as well. She's nailed that 'Chinese-Super-Rich-Kid' look and strutted that sky-high confidence to the point that it becomes so natural and very convincing.
I like the message she sends. It's true, those with excess wealth get even more for free, and it shouldn't be like that.
I'm disappointed that so many people are quick to reduce her to just her looks. She put a lot of time and effort into this project and had the courage and confidence to execute it. Yes being pretty is an advantage, but it shouldn't discredit the amount of work she put in. Especially since pretty privilege is not an individual's fault, but the entire society's.

I’m not necessarily surprised that she got away with all of these things. I’m more surprised that she was safe and no one tried to hurt her. We are taught that it’s not safe for women to do things like sleep in a public place. I’m just glad that she is ok.

China is one of the safest countries, don't even worry about that. You can go out at 3am in the street. Beside, these places she stayed are even safer: the airport, the hotels ,the galleries etc which have many police and guards. when I was a teenage girl I always sleep on the sofa in Beijing airport if I arrive at night. Because my family think it's safe staying in the lobby than catching a taxi to hotel.
Wow it takes courage to do something like this. Many of that age would be shy and scared of what people might do or say if caught.
Yes I would too, but when you really think about it, what’s the worst that can actually happen right? Get kicked out at most
It only works for females. If you are a male you have to be more smart about it. Chances of getting kicked out is more often for males.
Not surprised at all, we all have this underlying problem of treating people how we see them, how we’re indirectly taught to see and treat others since were children. See a homeless person on the street? Ignore them, avoid eye contact and feel nervous until they move on, somehow we learned they are less than people. See someone with wealth? Admire them and think they are more than normal people. This should make us question ourselves and our own prejudices, yet she didn’t show us the countless privileges the wealthy get from the state such as reduced taxes and special laws.
The ironic part is them mega rich see normal people like the normal people see the homeless people
This experience would not have succeeded if not for her pretty face. Once again a tangible proof of how superficial and sad our society is.

Exactly. People are missing the point. It's mostly because she's a pretty GIRL.
@Logen M Yeah. Her look isn't the only thing that makes her success. Her behaviors, confidence, clothes, bags, etc also matter. So it isn't right to only judge her success based on her look alone.
Have to give it to her, a real con artist. And I don't feel bad for those who were duped. And this whole thing showed some social problems I don't expect to ever be fixed.
She's a genius. People are saying it worked because she fits the Chinese beauty standards, and I'm sure she's aware of that and used that to her advantage during the project.
It wasn't just her her look that allowed her to do this but her confidence as well. I think this story is inspiring beyond the discussion of class. It shows how powerful confidence combined with some skill and determination can be.
one question though: how did she manage to sleep in an airport lounge, hotel lobby and even ikea?? Like didn't the worker there told her to go home? And what does the actual customer think?
Exactly.in my country you can't even sit on the bed in IKEA
On Chinese Valentine’s Day, the hotel staff probably let her stay when she told them she was trying to catch her cheating husband.
You can sleep in airport lounge without being questioned. My maximum stay on such was 16 hours.
I think that this was an interesting social experiment. Not everyone would have the confidence to play the role of "socialite" for three weeks straight and to even sleep in the lobby of a posh hotel. I especially enjoyed the parts where she would put the extra food in her "Hermes" bag, lol. I like how she thinked outside of the box for her project, and I wish her the best of luck at her new job. :)
Seems like a very interesting project, as a teacher I'd definitely give her an A for this
When I was in my very early 20s and didn't have the income I have now, I did this a lot too and it works everytime. An example: if you dress well and look well put together, you can be wearing fake everything and people will not suspect otherwise.
Pretty privilege exists. Let's face it. Even if she didn't look rich, she'd get away with a lot of stuff based on her prettiness alone. Pretty girls in bars get free drinks even if they don't look rich at all.
