I fly into Atlanta, Georgia regularly for connecting flights to either Gulfport or Mobile (wherever the vessel I work on is at that particular time.) The attitude of the folk working at immigration is something else. I have travelled all over the world for work purposes. Never have I felt the hostility I experience coming into the States in other places. Funnily enough, going the other way is fine. Usually from Gulfport. All smiles at the check in, boarding pass check, hand luggage scanning. Get into departures for a coffee. All friendly.

complete lack of maintenance: lie. absolute fucking lie
cops? LOLOLOLOL. most of us never even deal with cops and when we do, it’s a piece of cake
who are you people?
People who regularly fly in and out of the US, who rent cars and drive when we're there, those kind of people.
People who has to deal with US Customs and immigration. Those were idiots in 1996 when I last visited, and have gotten much, much worse since then.
I moved from Glasgow Scotland to San Diego California in 1968 when I was 17. Back then the buildings in Glasgow were still black from years of smog, everything in San Diego looked new and were clean. One of the first things that amazed me was seeing a hearse going 70 mph on the freeway on my way from the airport. When I went into a restaurant I had to point to what I wanted as no one could understand me. The first time I ordered a burger, when it came I told them it wasn’t mine as it was massive, had salad on it and a bunch of fries. The ocean was warm. Girls loved a Scottish accent. I could go on and on, I may as well have landed on Mars
Ah but that was 1968…
It seems the airport offal takes great pleasure in creating misery for all travelers. I try to avoid all transit travel through USA because I land up in a situation every time with some authoritarian mickey mouse character
I think it may have something to do with the types of people who tend to be drawn to those jobs here in US. We all knew someone like that in high school, no? At my school it was usually the ‘football jocks’ [American, not soccer]. Not so surprisingly, I knew that several did go into policing, one even becoming police chief of small town near me. He also taught criminal justice courses at local community college…but…my impression of him was: Once a blowhard, always a blowhard! Too many stereotypical police procedural TV shows here, which are very different from the European ones I’ve see on satellite TV. Lots of questionable role models….And we see on the TV news and documentaries the types of murderous behavior they get away with, time & time again - even when they are wearing the friggin’ body cams, or witnesses are filming them w/their cell phones!! So, no incentive whatever to conduct themselves in a mature & respectful manner…No consequences to their abhorrent behavior. I thought this might just be my bias, but since I have become friends w/a former cop, what he told me was that approx. 85% of those on his force were basically a*holes. Remember Serpico? Seems it is the good ones who end up being ostracized by their fellow cops…
That’s why there need to be higher standards for police officers in the US.

In a country where any deviant or crack pot can have a gun with sufficient firepower to mow down a classroom or assault a capital building, why would a cop be a charm school exemplar? Nevertheless, they pretty much are. I've rarely had a bad experience at the hands of the police. Of course, I have sufficient sense to recognize that when I'm wrong,…I'm wrong. …ran a red light, jumped the line at the grocery, whatever. I don't argue; what for? And most of us have enough sense to recognize a harried cop or other public service functionary; they haven't the time to make a smiley kissy face,. .just take care of what has to be done and move on.
The infrastructure? An awful mess. So glad we have a president who will do something about it.
I noticed these things as well. Security at airports is a horrible experience. Yes and lack of maintenance everywhere. Australia is the same with lack of maintenance too. Especially the council where I live. Flying in USA is not pleasant - it’s a drag. Go by bus .
I was shocked that the American customs officials treated us like criminals instead of blurry eyed people coming off a long flight. The paranoid style of American law enforcement is appalling.
that attitude is typical. Most if not all police view us as criminals and potential if not actual violent felons, a self fulfilling prophecy if they stop someone for any or no reason and come off as impersonators and violent felons themselves. (Example: James King Institute for Justice)
I'm Dutch and I have lived in Denver, CO since 2010. Both statements are right. But for me it's the space. You have parts where there is no one around for 100 s of miles.
Yes! I was quite surprised to come across so many folks who spoke in monosyllables, mostly slang, without the ability to string together sentences in correct American-English. TV broadcasters were awful, some of them pronounced many words incorrectly. Money seemed to be ‘God’!
I didn’t see the country as ‘the country of the free’ , where people mostly live in fear, fear of their neighbours, fear of someone shooting, fear of yet another medical bill that a medical insurance would not cover, fear of walking in the street, fear of just about anything and anybody. Racism felt very strong in some sections of the population, with the divide between rich & poor palpable. Last but not least, I’ve never seen so many obese people, as the ones I saw in the US. Food portions are too large at many restaurants, and take away shops. Why do food portions need to be so large? Considering the level of poverty that some areas experience, surely food portions could be a bit smaller so as to feed others too!
I couldn’t wait to leave and didn’t wish my children to be brought up in the US.
I suspect the police in other countries don't deal with as many assholes?

What struck me on my first visit was the attitude of border control and the Police - very abrupt. It was much the same on my seconf visit. BUT I have noted that coming back into the UK there has been an increasing tendency for Border Control here to be a tad more officious and offhand than they used to be - if you end up having to go to a person rather than an automated gate.
The other thing that struck me in North Dakota was the level of racism against the Lakota from the local reservation. Some real nasty people - my grandfather fought those dirty bastards - type of talk. Thank goodness we Europeans tend not to hold such attitudes - we really would be in trouble.
What else? The way people you didn’t know would come and talk to you like you were a long lost friend.
Then there was the crime… I nearly collapsed when I saw Fargo the first time - It felt like I knew some of these people
In Italy police is extremely corteous and usually in the presence of ladies take their hat off and gloves and very politly request thta documents be exhibited. No gun is even touched. Obviously American policment have to deal with a different kind of people ion USA, but that the police has such arrogant attitude with people that pose no threat. It has been remarked that Pllice must act and apply rules without any exception or personal jugdment, but again, typical American hyposcricy, they say that the police must exercise jugment on whether thay are justified in shooting. In gact we see that they shoot kids, normally black, even with their arms up.
Why in other civilized countries this does not happen?? But America is the best country in the world. Isn’t it?
When we went to the States we had an 84 year old lady with us. We were at the back of the queue for passport check, no seats but 2 near the check desk, asked if the old lady could sit there till our turn came and was told no way, disgusting way to treat an old lady.
It’s unfair to compare the maintenance on roads between USA and the Netherlands, because of the millions of bicycles ridden in the Netherlands, have minimal impact on the road surface.
We are a primitive backwater craphole, and all the moreso since Reaganomics kicked in.
Don’t expect to find here what you know as “civilization” in Europe. More like a chaotic Wild-West shit show.
“the complete lack of maintenace for the infrastructure.” Just the opinion of a disgruntled USA-ian tax serf… Because we throw our money into that furnace known as the military-industrial complex so we can play globo-cop…
Police behaviour tends to reflect the community they serve. Communities that behave respectfully towards one another tend to find their police respectful of them. Those that aren’t are likely to find the police wary and abrupt.
Being a nation with so many people armed, American police can be reasonably expected to act with greater concern for their own safety.
I think this second point is genuinely the one I’ve noticed in my time in the US. From the border guys to police officers on the streets. No sense of humour, very aggressive, no politeness, no courtesy. Shame really
first time in Miami a woman offered me a slice of pizza on the bus, then we got lost a young teen asked me to follow her car and took us to our rental home, In new Orleans, we were invited into an older couples house. Really nice people really lousy government

I've lived here for seventy years and I agree…Many cops do a fine job.. but often the police are either rude or downright arrogant. And I've seen it all over the USA. It's a dang shame. But the people who become cops are often not the best or the brightest… but they could still be polite and friendly. Better training and sextion is needed.
I’ve just returned from a 3 weeks holiday in the Los Angeles area, and drove over 1000 miles. I didn’t see any actual potholes but I found driving on the Freeways very rough and noisy. Where I drove the roads were mainly concrete. Probably because of the hot weather tarmac would not be suitable. So the roads were definitely not as smooth as the motorways in the UK.
Neither shocked nor surprised as movies had prepared me. Everyone I met from the homeless man on the street to the California Highway Patrol Officer who pulled us over was pleasant, friendly and polite. Even the immigration staff were polite. I've always enjoyed my visits to the USA (about 17 visits total).
As an American, i agree about the police. They feel they are our lord's and masters…which they are not. They don't have to be jerks all the time and the average law abiding person is NOT the enemy…..
Have been to many places around the world, I feel my country, the US, is no more than a rich third world country. Great if you are in the to 5%, for everyone else it is no better, many times substantially worse, than many other countries… we are backwards and ignorant.
Sort of, yes.
The roads, first of all. They were exactly like the horror stories people used to tell from East Germany, pot holes in the highways and no maintenance for decades.
Then, the cheap stuff. The really cheap stuff in shops. All of so low quality that it would be illegal to sell in Europe.
And after a while, the widespread sheer squalor. I had expected the US to be much like Europe in terms of general standard of living, but it's actually closer to North Africa, with actual slum areas.
I have a good friend in Sweden who is a career military retiree.
He told me that the first time he was stationed in Washington DC, back in the 1980s, he was horrified to see people literally stepping over the homeless people sleeping on the sidewalks. In fact, the first person he saw asleep on the sidewalk, he assumed was ill or injured in some way so he stopped to render assistance and it took him some minutes to figure out why no one would agree to call for assistance (this was before cell phones).
He said that was the day he realised that the US was fundamentally a third world country.
