Those ancient paintings on silk panels were not exaggerating the way things look there.
This is what mountains normally looks like in China. They are just vertical pillars. The Chinese word for mountain is 山, and you can see the reason why. There really should be a different word for mountain in China as they don't typically refer to the mountain range we see in the west.

Aren't these just the mountains in the Guilin region of China?
This mountain is in the mid-east of China. Guilin is in the south-west. Yes, Guilin is also know for these pillar like mountains. These kinds of mountains are the most common type in China, to the point where a Chinese may look at a regular mountain range and say "that's not a mountain" as they don't match up to their common concept of mountains.
丘 - teeny factory with a smoking chimney
岳 - little boat with a smoking smokestack
Wolverine.
安 - fold-up picnic table with cake on it.
Congratulations you are now Chinese.
I'm not geology-savvy but if I remember correctly from a geology 101 course from a few years ago a lot of the mountains in China are the result of Karst topography, where limestone erodes leading mountains behind that are often largely vertical like this.
It doesn’t look real.
This feels like one of those 7D cinema things.
I wish I could go to Pandora.....
I wonder how mountains like this are formed.

It is mostly from the weathering and erosion of limestone over time.

I just watched the series finale of Avatar last night, and I'm like, do landscapes like this really exist? Like pillars and pillars of stone? How?
Well after seeing this it seems more plausible.
Might want to check out zhangjiajie
All it's missing is a Kung Fu master jumping from peak to peak.
That rollercoaster looks fucking terrifying. Imagine if it was an actual form of transport.
It's called a funicular.
I wish the video would have lasted long enough to go through the gap.
I know they are lights or something like that, but the posts on the side of the railroad tracks look like they have skulls affixed to the top.
Wow. Love the view. Its in my bucket list. :)
The geographical make up of the Far East always blows my mind. Such beautiful landscapes!
Sooo beautiful
太美了
Why are they called the yellow mountains?
Beautiful, how is tourism there? Must be a popular place and maybe overcrowded. I would really like to go though.
I believe this is the train that takes you to the Fenghuang School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

Gorgeous but no way I'm riding that train or whatever it is.
What is this? Pandora?
Me: Waiting for someone to mention what game this scenery is from
Also me: HOLY HECK THIS IS REAL
looks like the avatar movie
You’re exactly right, this is the location that inspired the floating mountains of Pandora! The national park has little statues of the dragons from the movie.
I thought that location was by Zhangjiajie
Are you fucking kidding me? Amazing
No photoshop and this still lookes beautiful. Nature is awesome.
The mountains are incredible.
The train tracks look pretty scary though. Ties are all different lengths and the trestle looks rotted out. I guess it adds to the excitement, just like going on one of those rides at a carnival.
Where is this in China and can you go on the rollercoaster or train I’m not too sure what it is, if you can I’d put this on my list of places I want to go

When I was a kid I went to the top where you could “climb” around the mountains by walking along these narrow staircases with chain lixs for a handrail. I’m glad it was foggy that day because otherwise I would have been scared shitless by the height.

I was there in 2015 for 3 days. We had to take a cable car (austrian) to get into the mountain range. One the things which stood out to me were the pathways. Every step we took was either on leveled ground or on stairs. Furthermore most of the paths were build into the sides of the mountains.
Our travelguide also told us, that we were really lucky to get such a nice weather. Most time of the year it is really foggy and you can't see shit. We got a taste of it at our departure, our sight was limited to roundabout 10 feet. It was pretty funny actually, nobody could see anything but the Chinese travel guides still tried to explain the scenery to the Chinese tourists "if you look over there you would normally see a beautiful mountain view, but not today".

I went to yellow mountains with my roommates in my last year of college. It’s fantastic. It’s a few hours from Shanghai, and there are plenty of buses to and from the yellow mountains. It is famously known as one of the most beautiful mountains in China.

I was just there last year and it’s breathtakingly beautiful, I highly recommend visiting. Also, try and go on a week day far from any holiday. We went right around May Day and the crowds were ridiculous. Also, if you’re used to hiking on trails in the US, it will be very different. It’s fully paved and there are stairs everywhere. Absolutely exhausting, but still a great experience.

Named stupidly. Huangshan *means* Yellow Mountain.
It's like Saying "Salt Lake, Salt Lake City". Makes sense to name a place out of its most prominent feature to me.
Like the Sahara desert. "Sahara" means desert in Arabic. So it's Desert Desert.
Or Lake Tahoe, in the US. Tahoe is a Anglicized word from the Native American language Washo. Tahoe means Lake. So it's Lake Lake.
English speakers seem to do this a lot. I can't think of any in Spanish or Arabic, but I'm sure there are some. As well as in other languages too.
Is this a legitimately real place on earth? It boggles my mind to think such beautiful places like this really exist. I wish I could travel the world.
The floating mountains in Avatar were in part inspired by Huangshan.
Pretty as a painting.
Amazing video. When I was there the concrete hiking paths were filled to the limit with Chinese tour groups and loads of people hiking in their Sunday finest. I’m talking full suits, women in dresses and designer shoes. It was crazy.
I was wearing hiking pants, poles and sporting a 65 lbs backpack with everything from a suit for business meetings 10 days away to a laptop computer. The Chinese thought I looked hysterical.

One of the most beautiful places I’ve ever visited. I was there in February about 17 years ago and it was neat to see in the snow.
Also, the road up the hillside overlooking the rice fields was one of the most butt-clenching trips in a Chinese van that I’ve ever experienced.

This is on my bucket list. Trying to learn Chinese first though!
I have a Taiwanese friend who insists it's best to learn traditional first because it's easier to step down than work up. Maybe I should go back to simplified though, because I'll need to go to China some day, more than Taiwan.
Personally I feel simplified is probably better unless you intend to go to Taiwan specifically. I went to China and basically nobody uses traditional, except for fancy store signs.
Also the changes to the radicals from traditional to simplified aren't really that difficult to figure out. I was able to tell that 愛(ài) was 愛(ài) pretty easily from context the other day. But like 90% of the characters are the same anyway, so even if you do learn traditional you'll probably quickly learn simplified too.
By far Nanjing was my favorite city: Just the right amounts of high-density urbanization and small-business community feel. The schools were great as well (Nanjing Normal and the foreigner school across the street).
My #1 experience was a bus trip we took out to a small town called Xidi (I think). Got to hike to the top of a hill early in the morning and the place looked so pristine - light urban community beset by mountains and wilderness on all sides. At night people would hang out "downtown" and it was like a mini festival with people performing or just chilling out.
If I could drop everything and move back to Nanjing and study Mandarin full-time that would be a dream.
You're playing it up. Nanjing might have to go on my list, too.
The WW2 memorial is worthwhile but the city as a whole is pretty accessible. Cabs, busses, subways; it was really easy to navigate around but even by foot if you can put in a few miles you can get to a lot of worthwhile locations.
FuziMiao is a really fun place to check out and its just outside downtown (fairly close to Nanjing Normal U.). At night the lights make it look amazing. Other than that you could just wander the city on foot and find some cool stuff like coffee shops tucked away on some back/side streets, restaurants by the dozen, street carts with food, beautiful architecture etc etc.
while traveling to huangshan i learned a cool old chinese poem.
I haven't been to all 5 yet, but huangshan is truly amazing and I highly recommend it.
I have to say learning another language especially a language with a rich written record can open your eyes to another world. They way the Chinese sees the world and their perspective can only be understood if you can read their language.
Also I can consider Chinese to be cultrual more than blood genetics. A White dude that reads and speak fluent Chinese to me is more Chinese than a an ethnic Chinese who can not understand the language.
I went in the summer too, god it was hot and a really hard climb. Got to the top of the mountain and there were frickin Chinese women climbing around in high heels!
Did you see the 60-70 year old men carrying huge bags of supplies up the mountain on their backs? They were old men with the calves of a body builder
I asked one old man if I can try carrying it and I couldn't even lift it off the ground.
There is something quite romantic about the fog, though I can't imagine that this is the place you'd want to see on a foggy day.
Yellow Mountain is amazingly beautiful. I saw monkeys aaand walked up the mountain for like 5 hours only to realize i had explored like 1/8 of the whole mountain. The whole site is huuuge.
