Q: Do you think her sentiment is something that’s quite prent among Japanese women nowadays, or is it just an isolated statement by someone like her who just says provocative things?

A: The people around me don’t say thins like, “short people don’t deserve human rights.” So i personally think its was an isolated statement by her. We would talk about taller people being cool, but we would not go as far as saying shorter people don’t deserve human rights.

答：我身邊的人不會這么說，諸如“矮人不配享有人權”。所以我個人認為這只是諸如這位女選手的少數(shù)人的言論。我們的確是會認為高的人很酷，但是我們也不會說“矮人不配享有人權”這樣過分的話。

A: Well, it might be something everyone thinks, but I think she just tried to sound funnier by using such an extreme expression. When you think about marriage, marrying someone tall would mean your children will also be tall. I believe it’s only natural to be considering those types of genetic factors.

答：當然。每個人可能都會像這個女選手這么想過，但是我認為她只是為了聽起來更有趣，所以用了這么極端的表達。當你談及婚姻時，嫁給一個高個子的人，你的孩子也會高。我認為就基因遺傳的角度來說，人們喜歡高個子這很自然。

Q: Today, we are interested in finding out what’s considered the ideal height for Japanese men. What would you consider to be the average height for Japanese men?

A: I’m not sure, maybe around 175cm. I have the impression that it’s shorter than in the U.S. and other countries.

A: When I’m on the train, sometimes I’m bored so I look at other people’s heights, and I think, “Oh, men here are short.” I am 170 cm, and i felt it was difficult to find someone taller than me.

A: I disagree. Although i can only approximate, I think of someone short when I hear 170cm. So I thought the average height would be a little higher than that.

A: That might be true. I’m currently 175cm with 4-inch heels on, but many people I see are around the same eye level.

A: 176cm. I would say I’m on the tall side.

A: 174cm. Well you just said the average is 170cm, so that’d make me 2-inch taller than average, right?

Q: How do you personally feel when you hear a statement like “men under 170cm don’t deserve human rights”?

A: Well, since I’m actually 170cm, I learned that I surprisingly still have human rights. I’m very grateful … to be alive.

A: I wouldn’t say it was shocking, but because I am actually under 170cm, I have felt insecure about my height before as well. So when someone says something like that, it makes me wonder, and I end up talking it personally.

答：我倒不是說這讓人震驚，但是我確實不到170cm，我從前就對自己的身高很沒有安全感。所以一有人問我這種話題，都會使我困惑，我也會主動結束話題。

Q: What would you say is your ideal height for yourself?

問：對你來說，理想身高是多少？

A: Well, I think I’m currently at about the right height.

答：我認為我現(xiàn)在的高度就挺理想了。

A: Ideally, I would have wanted to be 180cm. It would make my clothes fits better. That’d be ideal, but it’s …It’s not like it’d kill me to be shorter so I guess it’s alright.

答：理想的話，我希望自己有180cm。這樣會穿衣服更加好看。當然這只是理想的情況，矮一點也不會殺了我，所以我覺得都還好啦。

Q: Just for comparison, how tall are you and what do you wish your ideal partner’s height was?

問：就做個對比哈，你多高，你理想中的男人多高呢？

A: I’m 151cm, and my ideal height for my partner is 170cm.

答：我151cm，我希望我的另一半170cm。

A: I’m 163cm. My ideal, I’m not sure…maybe about 170cm, because I enjoy wearing heels.

答：我151cm。我的理想型，我不是很確定……可能170cm，因為我喜歡穿高跟鞋。

A: I’m 154cm and ideally above 170cm would be good. So I wouldn’t say I’m particularly picky in terms of heights.

Q: There appears to be this perception in the West that Japanese people are relatively shorter. Do you agree? And if yes, what do you think is the reason behind this?

問：西方世界有這么一種觀點，認為日本人相對較矮。你同意嗎？如果同意，你認為這背后的原因是什么呢？

A: Yes, I think we are relatively shorter. I used to live in the UK, BUT they’d always check up on my age. I would think, “It’s probably because of my short height.”

答：是的，我認為我們是相對矮了點。我曾經住在英國，但是（出入一些場所時候）他們經常會查我的年齡。我認為，”大概是因為我矮吧?！?/b>

A: I heard that in the Netherlands…Was it milk? I’m not sure, but I heard that people are very tall because they drank a lot of milk or something. So I think your diet might have a lot to do with it as well.

答：我聽說在新西蘭…是因為牛奶吧？我也不是很確定，但是因為喝很多牛奶或者吃了其他什么東西，我聽說那邊的人都挺高的。所以我認為飲食也和身高有很大的關系。

A: My father is from another country. My relatives on my father’s side are all very tall. Compared to my Japanese relatives, the size difference is very noticeable. It made me wonder if environmental factors play a role as well.

答：我爸爸來自另一個國家。我爸爸那邊的親戚都挺高。和我的日本親戚比起來，身高差距十分明顯。這讓我猜想是不是環(huán)境因素也對身高有所影響。

A: Long time ago, Westerners were hunters, so they would chase after their prey. They had to run fast, so their bodies got bigger and their legs got longer. Japanese people were agricultural people. They squatted down to cultivate the rice fields. It’s not as if being tall is advantageous for plowing rice paddies.

答：很久以前，西方人是獵人，他們追逐獵物。他們必須跑得快，所以他們的身體很大只，腿也很長。而日本人是農民。他們彎腰在水稻田里耕作。長得高對種水稻來說并不是又是。

Q: Do you feel there is more pressure now on Japanese people tobe seen as taller?

問：日本人均身高越來越高，你會感到更大的壓力嗎？

A: I don’t. For me, I have accepted my height. There are still many things I can do.

答：我不會。對我來說，我完全可以接受我現(xiàn)在的身高。除了想自己的身高，我有其他的事兒要做呢。

A: Years ago, I think there was quite a bit of that pressure, but recently there has been a shift in perception to focus more on what’s inside that person.

答：很多年前，我可能會覺得壓力變大了。但是現(xiàn)在人們的觀念發(fā)生了改變，比起外在，更關注一個人的內在了。

A: There is a tendency to think taht being taller is better, but, in the end, the inner charm is what really counts. I can’t say for certain how men feel, but I don’t think it’s something they should feel pressured about.

答：確實存在一種傾向，認為越高越好，但是，最后，還是內在魅力更為重要。我不知道男人們究竟怎么感覺的，但是我不認為身高需要過分焦慮。
