The Global Times Research Centre, a body affiliated with the Chinese state-run tabloid newspaper, asked 1,200 young adults in China about their attitudes towards Western countries.
The proportion of respondents who saw them as equals was six percentage points lower than it was in a similar poll conducted in 2016, while the percentage who “l(fā)ooked up to” the West was 30 points lower.
Steve Tsang, a political scientist and director of the China Institute at the SOAS University of London, said the shift in the balance of power between China and other countries was another reason for the change of attitude among Chinese people.

It showed the world, its democracy is a sham with the ex President still disrupting the country and escaping accountability for causing the US Capitol riots. @Shan L. China's economy in the past was behind that of western countries. Not anymore. China along with the entire Asian region is where the world's economic engine now rests. The west used to be that engine, not anymore. Asia is unlikely to see the type of migration the west likes brag about, because of Asia's large population densities. Asia never seized lands and then displaced original inhabitants as the Europeans did in Australia, NZ, North America and elsewhere.

@Shan L. The number of people emigrating from China is minuscule relative to its population size. In fact, India sends the largest number of immigrants to the US, not China. Since China does not accept immigrants, claims that no one wants to immigrate to China are spurious, the doors are not open to begin with.

There is pointless for any Chinese parents sending their children/young adults to study in US (UK & Australia) until Trump and his bunch of disinformation and conspiracy spreaders/followers such as Mitch McConnell, Lindsey Graham Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio Ron Johnson, Rick Scott, Kevin McCarthy, Marjorie Taylor Greene , Matt Gaetz, and Mo Brooks, etc. etc. have gone out of US Politics completely, otherwise they would continue causing domestic problems and national security risk to US administration which would not be able to provide a secure and safe environment to local Americans as well as overseas visitors/students. US are no longer the same US prior to Trump administration which had ruined US Constitution/Democracy/Reputation/Credibility by spreading his Disinformation (lies, fraudulen accursations, and conspiracy without evidence) at home and overseas countries. Not just the Chinese are disillusion with the US. Plenty of people in Asia, Europe and other parts of the world are falling out of love with the US. What used to be a relatively benign nation have developed into one of most arrogant, power crazy hegemonistic state in the world following the fall of the USSR. The old adage that "Absolute power corrupts absolutely” certainly rings true. The American dream is not even an American dream for American anymore, much less for the rest of the world.

It is important that people everywhere have an outward look in the world. For people in China, Europe can be a good focus. A start could be getting to know the diversity of the European countries: their culture, liberal human values, languages, but also their shortcomings like immigrant attitutes. For the young adults: travel Europe. Talk to people. Also show them your world in China. For the young people wishing to study, Europe also has very well integrated study programs, maybe even allowing to study in multiple countries. I would encourage to do that, and it will be a lifetime experience.
Rather look to the smaller northern countries, The Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Belgium.

The Chinese people used to have very good impression of the US and many dreamt of going to the US. That was the result of decades of American engagement with China that started with Nixon. It was extremely successful. Trump and his supporters destroyed this goodwill in only 4 years as they wished to create a new enemy. Things would have been a lot different now if Hillary Clinton was elected. History takes sometimes an unexpected tragic turn.
@C C. I suspect Hillary was just as anti-China as Trump. The only difference is the evangelical Christian Pompeo's agenda went further in demonizing godless China.

Sure there are still people who would like to go to the west, just like there are still people who would like to go to HK. The point is the numbers are getting lower and for those who want to return home are getting higher. Pretty soon, the west will lose all its appeal judging from the way they deteriorate.

China is trending up while the West in general is going the opposite direction. Young Chinese now can find a lot more opportunities at home than abroad. In addition, the racism and discrimination that Asians in general encounter in the West does not help.
Technology and increasing living standard of China is just a minor factor in the changing view of the people towards the west. To me, hypocrisy, lies and disinformation to contain China and the racist carries with that make Chinese realise that "Hey, the west that we look up to in the past are actually more morally corrupted. We are actually even better than them as a human being". This is the main reason to me.
@Hector L. Exactly
確實(shí)。
At first glance western democracies might seem preferable to more autocratic governance structures, but then you realise that there is no strategic planning and that inevitably powerful vested interests dictate the direction of government at the expense of the public good.
"Western Dream" ? You must be joking. Ask the Palestinians. Western bloody nightmare if you ask me.

Biden’s dithering on the Iran Nuclear Deal pushed Iran to China. Biden reluctance to engage in Israel- Palestine conflict makes it easier for China to be the No1 in the Middle East!
For the outsider, the western countries look more like they are rotting from the core. Don't blame China.
The East~West divide will always be there as negative views about each other continues. While many, for those more educated and exposed to global experience, will better understand and accommodate people from different continents, the vast majority are easily influenced in their views and acceptance of the other. The white supremacy following may have been revived by Trump in America but it is the opposite effect in Asia where the once superior image of westerners have been losing its hold. This is probably the changing society's behavior that the advancement in technology has brought, which allow greater access to knowledge and supported by the progress from the growth in China.
