How can America be the best country in the world when its home to people who are as patently obnoxious as the person who asked this question?
How can America possibly be the best country in the world when so many of its citizens defend the right to shoot each other, believe they are ‘better’ because their ancestors didn’t come from Africa and think that revenge execution of criminals is a good idea? As a physically weak old woman I abhor any system which is based on bullying and threats of physical violence. I am proud to say I value kindness, generosity, truth, equality and justice for all - values which lots of Americans scoff at.
I live in the UK
I can’t even begin to imagine how insecure you have to be to care what people 6000 miles away think about your country so much?

I'm not British but I think the British people would accept that the US is the best country in the world for:

Lol wrong on so many levels. UK a nation of inventors from the pneumatic car tyre to the atomic bomb, v America which has hardly invented anything. Uk- free specialised health care and a gp of your choice v America where you have to pay and get treated by whoever your insurance company tells you. America where there was over 50 mass shootings in the first month of this year v uk- where the last mass shooting was in March 1996 which led to a speedy change in gun laws. Uk- where to be called a world champion you have to beat competitors from around the world v America where if you win the national championship you are called a world champion. Uk- where Farm produce produce is natural and healthy v America where livestock are pumped full of growth hormones, crops are genetically modified and processed foods contain harmful corn syrup, the leading cause for obesity, heart failure, diabetes and fatty liver tissue in America.

Wait..did you seriously just give credit for the atomic bomb to the UK? I mean I know British people like to claim their country solely invented literally anything they can get away with claiming (jet engine, phone, light bulb, etc.)
wow…I guess British delusion runs deeper than I previously thought.
people get arrested for praying in the UK btw

How did the US invent the atomic bomb? The Tube Alloys, not American, splitting the atom, not American, Uranium ore? Heavy water? detonators? I think you need to read up on the history of the atomic bomb. The US stole the research and technology to build an atomic bomb from the UK and Canada.
I tend to agree that the denigration of the United Kingdom is silly and self-superior. However, let’s get the balance right. Most definitions of mass shooting include at least 3 or 4 victims of gun violence, at which point the 2021 shooting in Plymouth qualified. Still way less recent or frequent than US mass shootings but let’s try to make an accurate comparison.
I would point to the US being better on average earnings and property sizes. Some elements of the constitution seem good, too.
I don’t think there’s any country that’s just ‘the best’ in all measures. Most developed countries have some things they’re particularly good at.
I don’t think other countries accept any country as ‘best in the world’ either. Why would there be a league table called ‘best’ when there are so many criteria upon which to judge ‘best’.
It has to MEAN something. Best is subjective.
Also why would British people want England to ‘stand’ in front of America?
No-one in their right mind stands in front of Americans, they have guns, but are under no obligation to learn how to use them.
some of the greatest blue on blue incidents throughout the modern era have occurred where Americans were behind or above friendly forces so yeah, not a good place to be

America is far from being the best country in the world.
American education rates very poorly and well down the list. American education is far lower than other countries. A high school graduate only has a year 9 academic level compared with many other countries. An American bachelor degree is the equivalent of a high school graduate in other countries. An American PhD is the equivalent of a bachelor degree in other countries.

A very childish question, but there are some Americans who are unaware of their history, and dont realise that their country wouid be a very different one if British, predominantly English, people had not bothered to make long, dangerous sea journeys and set up colonies there. ( Whether that was a good thing is another question, if you were one of the many peoples living there already.). But if the English had stayed at home, someone else would have done it - the Spanish, French, German or. Dutch, probably, and American history would have been different. It is possible that several different “ countries” might now exist, as in the southern part of the continent, much of it Spanish speaking. The Louisiana Purchase might not have taken place. Who knows how things could have turned out? Britain was the founder of what the US is now, which is why English is the language there, although our days as Top Nation are in the past, like the Greek Empire, the Roman Empire, the Mongols, the French and the Spanish. As it will be for the USA, and the superpower that succeeds them. History is long, and people are already talking about Red States seceding and civil war. Things seem to be deteriorating fast - a mob trying to overthrow an election result by force, a former president very publicly trashing the integrity of many of the country’s major institutions, proclaiming deep corruption, the untrustworthiness of millions of Americans and the need to throw out the rule of law and the Constitution. People can’t disagree; they have to hate. A country founded on Christian principles now wears T shirts saying “Fuck your feelings.” and elected a man advocating grabbing women by the genitals. A young nation is crumbling before our eyes, while a very old one is watching, sadly. A beautiful country, with so much potential and so much already achieved, tearing itself apart. But all is not lost. We had a Civil War, over a hundred years before the USA existed, politically, and we ‘re still standing. Can the US find the strength to save itself? I hope so.

I think you forget the English have been thrown out of the America twice. That many other countries have contributed to the melting pot that is America much more successfully. England sent their religious extremist, poor, disenfranchised, and criminal to these shores. Only 22% of Americans claim English ancestors, but know ones gives a farthing about it. Haven't you noticed we try not to be like you no matter what the circumstances or consequences.
Whatever we've done wasn't because of English investment, in colonies throughout the British empire resources only travel in England’s direction. England gaslighted there Commonwealth into supporting their wars, but gave little in return for their huge sacrifices.
Americans are like Canadians on steroids and like Germans without OCD. The only thing we share with the English is a common language. We don't owe Britain anything not even accepting their version of history.
I’m not saying you owe anybody anything. Just that the US as it is today might be a different place if someone else had been the first European to arrive in large numbers on the eastern coast. . Who knows - it might be better, there were a lot of religious extremists who were not sorry to lose. But the question, one of many We’re Better than You ones, ignored the fact that the histories are intertwined. The Founding Fathers were mostly of English descent. Obviously, many other nations added to the national mix, but driving up the coast road from Boston to Bar Harbor, as we have done annually for 25 years, we go through or near so many place names that come from this country, that it feels like home - Bath, Portsmouth, Camden, Cambridge, Ipswich, Worcester, Salisbury, Falmouth etc. we have spent so much time in the US, we feel very at home, so it saddens me to see these infantile play ground jibes. The many Americans who have slept in my guest room are welcomed, and are as sad at the breakdown in common good manners that used to be a hallmark of American life as we are. Who imagined a gallows and shouts of Hang Mike Pence in a place that was one of the world centres of democracy?
It was the US who declared war in 1812. The cause was basically two fold. The American colonies did not like the support Britain was giving to indigenous tribes over territorial expansion. And Britain tightened the restrictions on trade with the French. The Americans tried to invade Canada and were kicked out and the White House was burned. The war was a draw.
And which wars did the English gaslight the Commonwealth into supporting? WW1/WW2?
And if you want to talk about gaslighting support we could talk about Vietnam and Iraq.
And Canadians are nothing like Americans except for perhaps similar language.

Errrrm No sorry I've re read the question and it still doesn't make any sense. For one thing you are suggesting that England and Britain are exactly the same thing ? You also suggest that the worst country in the world is somehow the best ?

In exactly what way is the US better than the UK?
Law. US has state and federal laws. So some states within the US have the death penalty while others don’t. So there is no constancy of law across the country. Murder in one state costs the murderer their life (but only if they don’t have enough money to buy the best lawyers) while in another state they get life.
The US has the highest ratio of its population in jail for murder than any other western country. You also have the highest rate in the world (IIRC) of gun related crime and murder.
In the UK, we don’t have the death penalty, but we do have a consistency of sentencing. Gun related murder is far lower as a ration of population, as is gun related crime.
Entertainment. American soap operas, films etc extol the idea that unless you have money, you’re not a success. They’re always about fabulously rich, eg Dallas et al. Hollywood in particular is pedalling deceptive films. The so called “historical” films are the worst, where they play wide and loose with other nations history (not just the Brits). Unfortunately, people see these films and think that they are accurate dramatisations of events.
British soap operas are about everyday people, in every day situations. The longest running radio soap is the BBC “The Archers” which was first aired on 1st January 1951, is still running and has aired 19,941 episodes.
Health. The health system in America is great - if you can afford it or have the right insurance. Even then, the adjusters within those insurance companies will go through your claim with a fine tooth comb to see if they can avoid paying a claim.
We have a free national health service.
Politically you elect a president. Those who have the most financial backing are the ones that seem to win. So in effect, your presidency can be bought. We don’t, we elect a political party to power, the leader of that party becoming our Prime Minister.
So, which is the better country. Yes, America has more wealth. Money doesn’t buy happiness. Less people in America have travelled abroad, so they do not look beyond a parochial level. The films that we make, our news reporting et al is generally far more even handed and specifically tries to avoid airing items that the reporting of would be prejudicial to a trial. Our health system is not based on wealth. We have a lower ratio of gun related crime than the US.
Our country is not a paradise to live in, but then neither is yours. Both nations have their good points and their bad.
America is undoubtedly a super place, with fabulous natural countryside. It is the unnatural concern with guns and mass murder that concerns many British (& French & Dutch & German & Italian & Spanish & Portugese ……….).
The USA leads the world in three categories:
Defence spending, where it spends a total amounting to more than the next 25 countries, 24 of which are allies.
Incarcerated people (prisoners) which is currently at 3% of the population, due to a 3 strikes rule based on a baseball rule.
People who believe Angels are real.
Everything else is bullshit.

Plenty of people around the world are aware of the fact that Americans are so self-obsessed and arrogant that they make this claim.
Frankly we’re pretty much fed up with it and likewise plenty find the claim utterly ridiculous.
America is unquestionably the home to many of the world’s not selfish, uncaring, bigoted and uneducated individuals and there’s NOTHING to be proud of for that.
The United States are OF THE AMERICAN CONTINENT. The US is not the entire continent called America. Numerous statistics uate the United former UK colonies inferior to ten or more other countries as summarized by the Human Development Index.
Base your thoughts on facts rather beliefs. Do research and do not believe that your world view is superior to that of all of humanity.
At least we don’t mangle the language with phrases like “stands nowhere in front of America”
Because the Brits are less responsive to lies and advertising than are Americans, the latter seeming to have cornered the market in gullibility whilst proving that empty vessels do, indeed, make the most noise.

Going back a few years, the officer classes, the ones with the education, the status, the class and the culture were generally speaking more than happy to let the lower classes, signed up as foot soldiers, to go in front and carry whatever little chip on their shoulder they had with them to be cannon fodder. I’d say it was a terribly unfair, elitist and classist system, but I think it works in this example. The ghastly experiment that has been the USA should give everyone else in the world pause for thought as we sit back and watch the chaos unfold.
That said America is a continent not a country and England is a country, where the education system is one thing clearly in front of the USA.

Just because you say something doesn’t make it true.
People who trumpet incessantly about how wonderful their country is and how it’s the best at everything are usually nationally insecure and realise on some level that they’re not the best at everything, but aren’t mature enough to be satisfied being in a great country - they can’t let go of an infantile need to be in the greatest country.
Because British people know that America is NOT the best country in the world.

America is not the best country in the world. We have free health service. People don’t carry guns. I’ve just been into Birmingham this morning to look at the commonwealth games ‘bull’. People of all nationalities talking and walking together no racism observable anywhere. The sun is shining. The kids are having a great time. There’s nothing wrong with a lot of other countries, and we don’t have a school shooting incident every week.
America is not the greatest or best country in the world. America is a third world third rate country which Americans dont seem able to realise.
Britain is a first class first rate country

I wonder why some Americans are so insecure that they ask questions like this. Either American is the best country in the world and we can all recognise that or you need constant reassurance because not everyone does agree.

Because we’re a fairly logical bunch, us Brits. And by any fair assessment of such an ill-defined notion as “the best in the world”, the USA comes quite a long way down the list. Quality of life is better in most of Europe, yes, including Britain. We’re more safe. We’re happier. We have more freedoms - yes, more, not fewer, which I’m sure will baffle the OP. We’re more equal. Our justice system delivers justice, not bigotry and profit for those already drowning in an excess of money.
I actually can’t think of a single thing that’s better in the USA than most of the developed world. I will, however, concede that your weather is better than the UK - but that’s not a good enough reason to wipe out all the rest. In any case, US-driven climate change will make half the US a desert and probably increase average temperatures here, so even that doesn’t really survive closer inspection…
