Note to self: don’t let someone who wrecked their own vehicle borrow mine!
I let a friend who got a DUI borrow my bicycle so he could get to work. The first day I rode it after he returned it, I tried to turn at an intersection.. and the handle bars turned, but the front wheel did not. If I were going any faster I would have wrecked into a car for sure.
Don't expect people who crash their cars will treat yours nicely.
That's the main reason I didn't start my own rental business
Well, you can write a penalty policy into the contract....
People on here have the dumbest roommates
Only half. The other half are the dumb roommates.
“AITA for leaving the lights on and draining the gas out of my (borrowed) car?”
By Op's wording I think OP also has a truck. When you leave the tank bone dry, you should definitely fill it up. Depending on the make and model that's an additional $60-$100 minimum the roommate cost them.
Yeah lol. “You wrecked your truck? Well sure you can drive mine ! ”
So who's dumber, the dumb roommate or the one who trusts the dumb roommate?

People on here are the dumb roommates.
People on here also make really dumb decisions. Why would you let somebody who just wrecked their vehicle borrow yours? And vehicles are expensive, and anything that happens when somebody else is driving it becomes your problem. OP is super stupid.
Who is dumber the person who wrecked the car or the roommate who let him borrow a car his own car after learning he wrecked the car?

Is it because you were the dumb roommate?

Is the check engine light old, or did it just turn on after your roommate drove it?
Not surprising it’s on with that many miles, honestly.
Good point. I drive old cars with that light chronically on, so I wasn't sure if it was significant or not, probably not.

Anytime I borrow somebody's car it comes back full. That's like rule number one my friend
Or at minimum fill it back to what it was before you used it.
If you're using the car for free, fill it up.Rentals are like $150/day.
Not everyone can afford spending 50 dollars to fill up gas. However, if you're borrowing something, make sure that you at least refill the amount that you've used
Anyone can afford to pay for $50 of gas or they shouldn't be driving. I understand that financial situations happen and that friends can help in those times. But I've helped too many so-called "friends" who just want to freeload. Anyone who isn't actively trying to make up for the time, money, and attention you've spent on them doesn't deserve your help. It is only when they have exhausted all goodwill in their relationships that they are forced to accept that they are the problem. All in all, you can try your best to help your friends and family, but if they don't show genuine appreciation and try to make good on the goodwill you show them, they aren't worth your time.
Where the hell are you paying $150/day for a rental? I just booked one for a whole week for $204 after all fees.

I was going to say if you have a 250k+ mile car without a check engine light, I’ll be surprised

I don’t think it was dumb to let him borrow your truck, I would have done the same for any of my roommates… people make mistakes. BUT I’d be pissed if they treat my car like this, I would never let them borrow it or probably anything again.

My wife and I have a policy where we only will allow our parents to drive our vehicles. And that's because we know if they damaged the vehicles they would fix them. Letting anybody borrow your car just plain stupid. You shouldn’t even let your friends, lovers, or even family drive your car for any reason.
