I think you're ignoring the story context. If we just say that Vietnam belongs to the ASEAN (economic) area, I believe the Vietnamese will not obxt. But if we say that Vietnam is completely Southeast Asia just because they belong to ASEAN, I believe they will not be able to accept it.

I am Japanese. I don't know anything about Vietnam. But, I know that Vietnam is Not in East Asia Also, I see some movies about Vietnam war. Vietnamese ususally have darker skin and shorter height than East Asians.
I believe most Japanese in Japan would feel the same as me.

Japanese people in the past were shorter than Vietnamese people. Japanese soldiers are only 150cm tall while Vietnamese men are 152cm tall. I don't think height or skin tone is the issue here. You Japanese used to be one of the shortest in Asia, that's why Chinese, Koreans or Vietnamese people often call them “Wa” or "short Japanese" (sorry if it offends you, but I'm just talking about historical fact). You guys have only grown up about height recently. As for black, it's a fact that Koreans used to be much darker than Southeast Asians today (not to mention Vietnam, among the whitest in Southeast Asia).

Logically, I’ve always considered it a Southeast Asian country. Emotionally? I… Hm. I don’t know. Emotionally, I’ve always felt a bit closer to Japanese, Koreans, and Taiwanese (I’m Chinese, and no, I don’t need anyone telling me Taiwanese are technically—), but I’ve always felt close to Vietnamese and other Asian ethnicities too. I mean, they’re still Asian. So yeah!
At the end of the day, we’re all brothers and sisters, so let’s gather around and EAT SOME PHO!

Vietnamese are genetically more Southeast Asian, consider they have darker skin color and their average height is much shorter than CJK.
Vietnamese culture is more East Asian, at least the north Vietnam.
Vietnamese is geographically southeast Asian without any doubt.
So in simple words, I personally consider Vietnam as a Southeast Asian country but some kind assimilated by East Asia.

I agree with most of the points you made but I really disagreed with the first point. TL;DR Vietnam was one of the Baiyue tribes living in modern-day Guangdong, Guangxi and Northern Vietnam whose empire/kingdom ?u L?c was defeated by 趙佗 (Tri?u ?à, who was a Han Chinese general) and incorporated into 交趾(Giao Ch?) which would later be absorbed by the Han Empire which began the 1000 years of Chinese domination 時北屬 (Th?i B?c Thu?c). Note that the original Viets, who were of Tai Kadai origins from northern Thailand and nearby area, were RACIALLY and CULTURALLY assimilated by the Chinese. That’s the reason why Vietnamese have around 60%–80% of their language originated from Chinese, and every Chinese word has their Vietnamese equivalent, even if that word is not used much anymore in Vietnamese. For example, Phi Tr??ng (飛場), the word for Airport, was popular until the 21st century when the original Vietic word San Bay replaced it. Plus, the majority of Vietnamese are of Kinh T?c / 京族, the names for the newly arrived Chinese immigrants who lived in/near the capital Th?ng Long 升龍. Northern Viets are indistinguishable from Southern Chinese, and the dark-skinned Viets you see are often mixed/or newly conquered people from the Champa Kingdom.

The airport example is interesting because Vietnamese Americans still use Phi Tr??ng. It’s like we’re stuck, linguistically, in the 1970s and earlier.

Vietnamese are Vietnamese. Mongolian are Mongolian. East Asians are Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Singaporean, Taiwanese, and Hong Kong Folks. Southeast Asians are people from Laos, Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, and etc…
Vietnamese and Mongolian are separate from the other Asians. East Asians do not look like Mongolian for example, their body structure is also very different. Vietnamese do not look East Asian nor Southeast Asian, we are our own distinct classification.

There are 3+ countries that have been at war plenty of times in the past several millennia and see themselves as distinctly different. The last ethnicities my Korean parents wanted me to marry were Japanese and Chinese: they were the last two enemies.
Given that China had a war with Vietnam just 40 years back, and South Koreans were quite brutal during the American Vietnam War, relations are not entirely friendly.

Northern Vietnamese here. Neither, Vietnamese are not East nor Southeast Asian. Vietnamese have big eyes but light skin. Majority of East Asian have small eyes and light skin while Southeast Asian have big eyes but darker skin. Vietnamese have strong East Asian like work ethic but are also extremely social. Vietnamese are more social than even Southeast Asians. Vietnamese society is very warm, social, and welcoming.
I don’t relate to other East nor Southeast Asians. Vietnamese society is just very different from the rest of Asia.
