TAPACHULA, Mexico (AP) — A sprawling caravan of migrants from Central America, Venezuela, Cuba and other countries trekked through Mexico on Sunday, heading toward the U.S. border. The procession came just days before Secretary of State Antony blxen arrives in Mexico City to hammer out new agreements to control the surge of migrants seeking entry into the United States.
The caravan, estimated at around 6,000 people, many of them families with young children, is the largest in more than a year, a clear indication that joint efforts by the Biden administration and President Andrés Manuel López Obrador's government to deter migration are falling short.

The Christmas Eve caravan departed from the city of Tapachula, near the country's southern border with Guatemala. Security forces looked on in what appeared to be a repeat of past tactics when authorities waited for the marchers to tire out and then offered them a form of temporary legal status that is used by many to continue their journey northward.
“We've been waiting here for three or four months without an answer,” said Cristian Rivera, traveling alone, having left his wife and child in his native Honduras. “Hopefully with this march there will be a change and we can get the permission we need to head north.”

López Obrador in May agreed to take in migrants from countries such as Venezuela, Nicaragua and Cuba turned away by the U.S. for not following rules that provided new legal pathways to asylum and other forms of migration.
But that deal, aimed at curbing a post-pandemic jump in migration, appears to be insufficient as the number of migrants once again surges, disrupting bilateral trade and stoking anti-migrant sentiment among conservative voters in the U.S.

This month, as many as 10,000 migrants were arrested per day at the U.S. southwest border. Meanwhile, U.S. Customs and Border Protection had to suspend cross-border rail traffic in the Texas cities of Eagle Pass and El Paso as migrants were riding atop freight trains.

Arrests for illegal crossing topped 2 million in each of the U.S. government’s last two fiscal years, reflecting technological changes that have made it easier for migrants to leave home to escape poverty, natural disasters, political repression and organized crime.

On Friday, López Obrador said he was willing to work again with the U.S. to address concerns about migration. But he also urged the Biden administration to ease sanctions on leftist governments in Cuba and Venezuela — where about 20% of 617,865 migrants encountered nationwide in October and November hail from — and send more aid to developing countries in Latin America and beyond.

“That is what we are going to discuss, it is not just contention,” López Obrador said at a press briefing Friday following a phone conversation the day before with President Joe Biden to pave the way for the high level U.S. delegation.
The U.S. delegation, which will meet the Mexican president on Wednesday, will also include Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and White House homeland security adviser Liz Sherwood-Randall.

Mexico's ability to assist the U.S. may be limited, however. In December, the government halted a program to repatriate and transfer migrants inside Mexico due to a lack of funds. So far this year, Mexico has detected more than 680,000 migrants living illegally in the country, while the number of foreigners seeking asylum in the country has reached a record 137,000.

Sunday's caravan was the largest since June 2022, when a similarly sized group departed as Biden hosted leaders in Los Angeles for the Summit of the Americas. Another march departed Mexico in October, coinciding with a summit organized by López Obrador to discuss the migration crisis with regional leaders. A month later, 3,000 migrants blocked for more than 30 hours the main border crossing with Guatemala.

Until this is treated as an invasion, and the full force of defense measures put into play, it will not stop. Our state and federal law enforcement agencies are overwhelmed. Unfortunately I don’t think any one has the will to exercise those options.
Sadly I think you are right. This is an full on INVASION and our own government is allowing it to happen.
I agree that this has the appearance of an invasion and not that of destitute indivdiuals and families trying to escape persecution. This is an organized action, aimed at gaining entrance to the country. I think that it is the nature of what these people are doing that makes the difference. I look at the photo, and I cannot see them as persecuted individuals. The intentional natureof their action requires appropriate intentional action on our part. If they're planning on walking in this manner and bullying their way across the border, then the border should be fully protected to turn them back. For non-citizens, l iving in the United States is a privilege, not a right. They are not entitled to live here and to act in this manner is a form of invasion.
Behavior does not change when it keeps getting rewarded. Only punishment reduces unwanted behavior. People flick into the US because they know rewards are waiting. If they knew they would get nothing, or be forced to turn back, they wouldn’t take the journey. We need to reduce the incentives.
It would be best for everyone if they arrived to a 40 ft wall covered in razor wire. Eventually they will stop trying.

They are misplacing their political activities; they need to protest in their home countries for improvements in education, relaxation of economic regulations (in particular allowing for limited/no competition in markets), improvements in law and order, and pro-growth policies for the common person, not for the rich and corporations.
With all of that in place, if the governments set up agreements/treaties with the US to allow for increased economic activity, including short term labor movement, that would be a great win win for both societies.

This is unsustainable. Unfortunately, I believe that the only solution is to place a militarized zone on the border-- electrified fences, barbed wire, posts every 10 miles, monitored by drones. Once word gets back to their native towns, they will stop coming.
I am compassionate of helping the less fortunate. This is too much and way out of order. I find myself having no mercy for those in the U.S. illegally and telling their friends and families the gateway to do this. Enough. To be this bold, meet them with force.
I don't blame them for wanting a better life and doing whatever it takes. I do blame our government for not securing the border.
The best practice is to put your yourself in position to help others. WAAAAAAY pass that! No one discussing actual costs. Transportation, medical, and educational. Just the cost alone for bilingual teachers is staggering. Nothing is free.
Immigration policy has been a thorn in our side for decades. To a lot of citizens, it seems pretty black and white, cut and dried; they apply for entry and wait for approval or denial. If they try to enter without applying for approval then they get arrested and deported; no exceptions. I think the American people are knowledgeable enough on this topic to be able to vote on a national referendum so that immigration policy does the will of the people. Our representative government has not done the trick on this long-standing crucial issue.
I am very pro immigration. My ancestors were European immigrants, I believe that immigrants are essential to America's success and I have lived as a foreigner in several countries. But, entry into a country that is not one's own is not a right, it's a privilege. Legal immigration to the U.S. needs to be made much more attainable, but we cannot just have thousands busting through without record or documentation.
This isn’t just anti immigration sentiment from conservatives. Stop trying to paint that picture. A lot of us middle left (with immigrant parents might I add) think it’s ridiculous, unsafe, irresponsible, and a strain on our system in every way imaginable. And don’t give me the talk about who is going to work in the farms etc. more than enough people to do that already. This is closer to an invasion and flat out unsafe for both national security and a lot of these immigrants.
Since these caravans keep happening, i cannot help but wonder how long it will be until another 9/11 happens. It is literally still the perfect way for those groups to infiltrate, again, because our government does little to nothing to stop it out of fear of offending someone.
The closer to the election we get, the worse this gets. The cartels and everybody else involved knows Trump has a real chance of being President again. They understand if that occurs, this stops. So it's full speed ahead for as long as they can.
What I do not get is why Americans treat this as their problem. There is no conflict in South America to have this world war level exodus of refugees. Each person in the caravan comes from a nation represented in the UN. And have UN embassy and state embassy in US. Ship them to their embassies to repatriate to their countries and come legally.
Why do people specially those with little to no eduction think that coming to the US solve their problems. They are coming to same poverty and desperation in a new country. They will end up so desperate that in many cases they might get involved with crimes and thing that could never imagine just to survive.
Most of the people in those pictures are men, aged 18 and up. If they won't fight to improve their country, what do you think they will do here? Milk our system, drain our economy and school system. This won't end too well for us.
Border security should never be a partisan issue. Both parties should be firm on border security. I do not believe any party will lose support by supporting border security.
At this point, what is there to call it but a purposeful, willful, intentional invasion of the United States? We can only assume the government is drawing up the plan for the surrender of the country to them all...
It is an invasion. What country would let such a group in without proper authorization at their border? So why should the US expected to be an exception?
What does it say about Joe Biden that he is demanding billions of debt spending to fund wars in defense of the borders of foreign countries, yet refuses to spend a dime on actually securing our own borders?
Curious how the article said many were families with young children but none of the photos showed any families with kids. Looked like all military aged men from different countries to me
The idea is to overwhelm the system. This is the plan to take down the country. So far it is working.

How and WHY should the US support any of these people? WHY? This country is so far in debt now it isn't funny and these people sure aren't going to be paying any taxes!
It is a shame the US protects someone else's border in billions but would not have an ounce of willingness to protect the southern border. Funny, the man in the WH would rather put a fence around his residence using taxpayers's money, but ignore and stop building the fence at the southern border.

Enough is enough why is our government allowing this, just letting them illegally cross sending them all over so hard working tax payers pay for their free ride. This is a takeover with no weapons'.
With no health checks, they will be sitting next to our children and grandchildren. No background checks either so we have no idea if they are safe to be here. This issue needs to be fixed so we do not get overrun with non productive people.
When done correctly, immigrants are welcome and easy to hire. Our corrupt government officials have sold us out for campaign dollars and votes.
