I don’t know.
There’s a phenomenon in Asia of western beg packers. I saw one in Fanling of all places last week. He held up a sign begging for money…
Why do they do it?
Because apparently people in Asia are suckers and there’s enough people who give them money to make it worthwhile… instead of kicking the shit out of them.
Secondly immigration officers aren’t strict enough in many places. When I went to Russia? When I applied for a visa I had to give them 1 year of bank statements. I had to prove I had at least $150USD for each day I intended to be there for.
For some reason many countries don’t do this for some reason.
Back in the 2010s to my chagrin I met an idiot who thought he could live like a King in Hong Kong for £1 a day. I met him on the airplane as I was going to the toilet.
Similarly there was a dine and dash in Wanchai a couple years back a bunch of French tourists the most common comment was I can buy the entire restaurant for $10.
Most western travelers aren’t going to need a visa for the great majority of countries. That’s what allows them to get away with this.
Not really “get away with”.
Say, you are in some strange country, you need $800 to buy a ticket home. You now have enough money for 2 more hotel nights. No money to eat. Can you beg for $800 in 2 days? And after 2 days you are totally homeless.
The local people can give you a few dollars. But definitely not enough for an $800 for an air ticket.
This is highly stressful and embarrassing.
I can’t say this is a situation I would want to end up in - you are right. If say, you’re travelling through Bali, trying to work there - not going to happen - you’ll either fall foul of the authorities and/or never save enough for that ticket home because local wages to wAsh Dishes or wait tables wouldn’t be enough. That’s if a local would employ you in the first place.
But if this was a genuine case of being “caught short.” Why wouldn’t you call home to your friends and family? I’d rather have that embarrassing conversation than put out a begging bowl to continue a lifestyle that the people around me typically could only dream of.
The best way would be to go to the Embassy of your country (hopefully there is one).
The embassy will certainly do something to help their own citizen out. Hopefully you do not lie to them about the fake dilemma to get a free ticket home. This would ruin it for many people with genuine emergencies.
The embassy would probably help you out if you have had everything stolen and get you on your way with a new passport. The Australian embassy would probably get you on the next flight home if you wanted it, but don’t be surprised to see a bill for the ticket when you got home.

The U.S. even charges people for the charter flights that it arranges to evacuate from countries that suddenly become dangerous. It’s much wiser to book a commercial flight home, at any cost, using a credit card.
You will be surprised how these spontaneous travelers would have maxed out their credit cards the very first round. Because that’s the easiest thing to do: you just swipe the card.
The US embassy will always get you a ticket home if you really need it. They will always send you a bill though and if you don’t pay it they’ll just confiscate it from your earnings or future tax returns.
These assholes have parents they can call anytime it stops being fun who will “rescue” them with a plane ticket.
Irrelevant, you don’t go on vacation with a one way ticket you buy a return ticket when you plan it out. This is a dumb excuse and doesn’t make any sense at all.
Some people aren’t very smart. They also don’t think “vacation” like normal folks.
Normal people have their 8–5 jobs that is very hard to get days off (depending on which jobs of course). So when you apply for 8 days off, they would expect you to show up to work on the 9th day. So your vacation is very concise, time wise.
These backpackers are free spirited people who… just think about going, and “l(fā)et god/luck decide their adventure”. They only see one step ahead of them. They want to solve problems as they come. Very adventurous.
Except in the real world, things often don’t happen like folk's tales or movies.
Interestingly a white woman came to Nigeria hoping to survive on 100$, that did not work out as plan and if not locals she would have starve to death
Mamy are backward enough to not know they living cost of the country they want to visit.

That is the problem, and that how they get themselves in unnecessary situations they shouldn't be in
Ok but Hong Kong is now less expensive than the USA
Yes, it’s less expensive, but it’s not $1 a day.
Yes and to think these people cannot even afford it when they have the strongest currency. Just shows white people being in the "first world" does not guarantee wealth.
We call them begpackers down here
Either they are stupid or opportunist. You go to a country and and instead of contributing to their economy here you are begging for money to fund your global trip.
I say it’s just stupid all around. Being in foreign country is costly, because you can easily pay more for rent, and with nearly zero opportunities to have a decent income. So the more you drag out begging, the more you lose.
Unless some of these people figure out a way to make mad income in foreign countries, then they can do whatever they want.
No beg packers in Singapore. Begging is prohibited.

And people say white privilege doesn’t exist…
And some people bring up race for everything
Begging is a privilege? Being a clueless idiot is definitely a privilege though, bestowed upon many people, white, black, brown, green, whatever.
Overseas travel is a privilege though. If you are from US/Canada, UK/EU, Aus/NZ you can pretty much travel the four corners of the globe, not needing to set foot in an embassy (physically or digitally) to get a tourist visa.
Begging to maintain access to that privilege is the height of entitlement.
That has nothing to do with being white though. All of the countries you mentioned have plenty of brown people and people of other ethnicities who enjoy exactly the same privileges given to them by the passports they hold.
Most people beg in their own countries and they do so for food. These people are begging for plane tickets…
I’m not saying this is in any way acceptable. I would never give any money to any of those begpackers, imo they should be deported immediately from whatever country they’re begging in. Should probably be put in immigration jail until they can pay for a plane ticket back home, or find someone willing to buy them one… Still doesn’t have anything to do with some hypothetic “white privilege” here.

Westerner here. If you are from a Western country, and you are willing to work, you will have more money to travel than any Asian person out there. We are richer and more developed. Plain and simple. Begpackers are hippie/leftie parasites, they CHOOSE to be “poor” and beg for money, cause they are too lazy to work and make money. I've never came across one, but they would get just insults from me. I'd rather throw my money down the drain.
Exactly! For me, having the ability to travel to most countries in the world as an Australian citizen, with limited scrutiny of my visa application by the authorities (if any visa at all) is a PRIVILEGE - imagine begging from people who will be lucky to leave their province, let alone the country.
I wouldn’t use “l(fā)eftie/hippie” labels to characterise the sort of people who beg on an international holiday - I would use the ENTITLED label. That what they are doing is an entitlement, not a privilege. You can be a leftie or rightie and be an entitled dickhead.
There’s plenty of stories from “hippy” communes where people would turn up expecting a lifestyle free of work and obligation, only to leave because the “alternate” way of living in fact, involves a lot of hard work and obligation.

I agree with the richer and more developed part, I disagree with the extent to which that is so. First off, there's heavy variation between countries and even the cities within, and I can guarantee to you that if ‘you simply work’ you won't be richer than even the top 20% of Asians. Yes, if you work a similar job in the West vs Asia (excluding Singapore and Hong Kong) you'll earn more in the West than in Asia, although this doesn't take into account the considerably greater living costs in the general West compared to Asia.
Very complicated and so many variables
I mean they are also all over their own country as well.
These people deserve to be put into jail for 30 years in harsh conditions. If I was the leader of an Asian country. These Westerners would not have it easier to mess with the locals.
I imagine that’s precisely the reason you aren’t a leader of anything.
Maybe jailing them for 30 years is over the top. But Arlind isn’t wrong to criminalize these people. Maybe instead of jailing them, just make their embassy responsible for them begging on the streets. This way, the respective country can police their own citizens.
It’s not an offence for having no money. You can just get rid of them back to their countries.
If they do, the Western media has a different story about ill treatments to foreigners.
That is maybe a little bit over the top. Just jail them at immigration holding facilities until they can pay for a return airfare and get rid of them. Simple.
Damn. What kind of sentence would you impose for shoplifting or jaywalking?
I usually budget AU$200 per day in holiday, and never go on a major trip without a return ticket and travel insurance. That being said we have had some road trips that were cut short by running out of many many years ago!
You do tend to see a lot of these younger travelers in south east Asia who think they won’t need to save and budget, that they can work their way across Thailand, or some bullshit like that. Makes the rest of us look like assholes!

Yep, whatever you do, make sure your escape route is already arranged in advance. Worst comes to worst, your retreat is still an option.

Was also shocked to see a western old man living under a bridge (homeless), collecting bottles.
Times has indeed changed.
