I will mention what I believe are my nation’s greatest problems in order of their significance, from top to bottom.

Rampant corruption steadily approaching kleptocracy levels. It is a well-known and widely accepted fact that corruption in South Africa is rife and has managed to penetrate every level of government, from the national government in Tshwane all the to provincial governments, districts or metros and to low-level governance structures such as municipalities and municipal wards. Funds which are meant to develop infrastructure in rural areas and maintain or renew crumbling infrastructure in urban centers simply vanish into thin air without a trace and the worst part of it all is that no one bothers themselves trying to hold the culprits accountable. Some political organizations are even built around corrupt leaders who become politicians just so that they can have the opportunity to loot state funds, and one their favored methods of achieving this task is called “tenderprenuership” where tenders are awarded to pre-sexted persons who then share the money with the politicians responsible for awarding them the tender; very little of the money will actually go to the intended project.

Rapidly increasing levels of violent crime. The growing rate of murder, rape, armed robbery, international human trafficking, kidnappings, hijacking and violence against women in South Africa has been well-documented by both independent observers and state agencies and they all agree that a high-level intervention is needed to turn the tide or else there will eventually be a big bang in the end. Some parliament members have even constantly suggested that the army be deployed to high risk areas of crime such as the Cape Flats in Cape Town and eThwekini on the east coast. Another problem which adds fuel to the fire is the level of corruption that has also invaded the police force; most criminals just pay off law enforcement officers to make crime dockets disappear and destroy the evidence and the justice is not that interested in justice as they claim in their speeches and formal mandates. We are not yet on the level of countries with drug cartel problems but we are slowly but surely getting there.

Economic stagnation. South Africa’s economy has not been doing that good for the past decade or so. This has led to a sharp decline of sales, production and employment. The state is the main culprit of this mess; their ineffectiveness and the rot within them has contributed greatly to the economic decline we are experiencing. Also, there are lots of programs which the state virulently keeps running even though it has been proven beyond reasonable doubt that they are doing harm instead of good. On top of it all, the state worsens it by relying too much on cheap foreign imports, particularly in the manufacturing and agricultural sectors which have effectively been taken out of business by cheap US, Brazilian and Chinese imports - much to the dismay of the people who made a living out of these industries. However, this is also connected to global economic woes.

Skyrocketing youth unemployment. Unemployment is a general problem in South Africa and it affects anyone or most of the people. However, the youth has been particularly hit hard by this phenomenon. It is no longer a matter of a lack of education and training or skills but more of a general unemployment issue since there are literally thousands of youths holding university or college degrees and qualifications, some of which are apparently high requirement skills which are in dire shortage such as engineering but strange enough, people who have them just cannot find employment. This is largely as result of corruption among other things.

I also think that the current government simply lacks a long-term vision as most states do. I have never actually knew what the South African government's long-term goals are and how they are planning to get to them. I think this contributes to government ineffectiveness and inefficiency as there is really nothing we are racing to get to. Instead, we just wake up, roll with the flow of the day and later onwards sleep soundly like babies without ever thinking about whether we are going to achieve our core aims within set times frxs and if we could improve our effectiveness and be efficient with resources.

There are lots of big problems and challenges we are currently facing in South Africa but I think these are the most hard-pressing and it is quite frustrating that there is no genuine plan or even a will by our political leaders to tackle them head on.

Rwanda
In no particular order, these are my top 10.
1.Overpopulation. We are the most densely populated ( low-income) country in Africa. Local resources are not keeping up with our population growth.
2.Youth employment rates. Our education system has not adapted to the current challenges of today’s marketplace. The culture is very relaxed and encourages students to get office jobs, which are very small compared to the number of graduates. I would need to write a whole book about this topic.

We are still doing the digging with hands, the same way our ancestors were doing it, about 100 years ago. We need irrigation and modern-day farming techniques, food storage, conservation, and food processing to add value to the produce of farmers.
4.Inflation does not keep up with wages. Life gets expensive for employees.

However, 25 years after, some people still think that the government ought to provide jobs for them. We have safety, security, rule of law, good progressive policies to facilitate businesses. What else people want from their government?

To make matters worse, the majority of those who complain are university graduates. Why do people feel entitled to jobs in the 21st century?

Given #1, they still think God created us to multiply and fill up the earth. Religious folks never disappoint to surprise me. Our culture is also to blame. Having children is seen as a prestige, and not a burden. It used to be a source of prestige, but it should not be the case anymore today. School fees, college, etc.

9.Transitioning from an agriculture-based economy to a knowledge-based economy. We have done our best to make this transition, but they are still some challenges.

10.Access to capital and an educated human capital. This goes back to #9. For small and medium business and young folks, securing funding is a hustle. Banks lend to already rich and connected folks. There are some programs to help the poor, but there are not that many sources of funding to the medium businesses.

I assume this is why many millennials are scared to go into business.

The biggest problem of my country + nation at the moment is their addiction with “Politics “ and “Political Talk Shows”.
Before Pervaiz Musharaf, we had only three TV channels (all owned by Pakistan Television Corporation). Like other Pakistanis, I wished for more TV channels so we could get plenty of options.

Cabel Operators system started during Musharaf rule and many movies, sports, music and drama channels were introduced. Primarily most of these channels were Indians and Pakistani channels later jumped in the race. There was a time when we had approx 10 to 12 sports channels.
How this addiction to politics started??.
Some Pakistani friends would argue but quality content of Indian channels (except dramas and Hindi news) were quite better. After 26/11, Pemra imposed ban on all Indian channels in Pakistan at local cable network. Meanwhile Geo News and ARY News emerged and were the pioneers of bringing political content at their channels. Pakistani people start developing their interests in politics as they had no other choice. This addiction opened the opportunity of more news channels and this is going on.

With the passage of time, all news channels mostly promoted political stuff at their channels in order to retain their viewership. They even copied the style of broadcasting news from one of our “neighbouring country“ which somehow looks very odd. Gradually all news channels started political talk shows which runs between 7 pm and remains till 12 am local time. They call political leaders from different parties who most of the time physically confront + abuse each other. You will notice your friends or family members will be discussing it next day with you.

This figure would be more as some news channels have very poor quality content and Cable Operators don't set their frequency.

The emergence of news channels have harmed the ethics of Pakistani society. If you are at home, office or public place, you will find one thing in common and that is tunning news channels and political talk shows. Even your guests will insist you to switch to political talk shows if they visit at your home in evenings. So you could easily imagine the intensity of this addiction.

Due to this nonstop addiction, I have stopped watching TV and don't use Facebook and Twitter either. I was gradually losing temperament and positivity in my life . I spend my time either reading, playing video games or watching football matches at my cellphone. One of my cousin’s domestic life is in jeopardy who spend most of his time by watching political tawk shows only.
The purpose of this response is to create awareness in my country fellows that our addiction to politics is heading us towards destruction.
