Australian woman gang raped in Paris ahead of 2024 Olympics

French police have launched an investigation after an Australian woman reported being raped by five men in the heart of Paris, BBC reported.

The 25-year-old woman sought shelter in a kebab shop located in the Pigalle district on July 20 morning, with her dress partially torn, a CCTV footage shows.

Although no arrests have been made yet, prosecutors have confirmed that the investigation is being treated as a case of "gang rape".

The incident occurred just days before the 2024 Olympics are set to commence in the French capital. Le Parisien, a French newspaper, reported that restaurant owners called for assistance upon witnessing the woman's distressed state. Firefighters provided immediate care to the woman following the alleged assault, and she was subsequently transported to Bichat hospital for medical examination.

The Paris prosecutor's office said that police are investigating the allegations and reviewing CCTV footage. "The investigation into the charge of gang rape likely to have been committed on the night of 19 to 20 July has been entrusted to the second judicial police district," the office said.

Meanwhile, the Australian Olympic team chief Anna Meares said that the team is aware of allegations by Australian woman that she was raped in Paris, urging the nation's athletes to take extra care during the Paris Games amid heightened security concerns.
