A confident China has moved ahead its deadline for a mission to Mars. Can China beat the United States in the race to the red planet? Well, take a look at this report.
China plans to get their hands on the rocks from Mars. Mars, Earth's rust-colored neighbor, has long intrigued us. Its barren landscape and wind-swept dunes are the backdrop for countless stories of alien worlds. The search for signs of alien life is even fueling the race to reach the red planet. China is one of the nations that wants to get there first.
It is planning the Tianwen-3 mission to Mars in 2028, having advanced the launch date by two years. This comes even as the US sample mission to the red planet is in limbo, bogged down by major delays and ballooning budgets. The change in the timeline of China's Mars mission signals its rising confidence in getting technology right for the complex operation. The Chinese team plans to bring back Martian soil samples by 2031.
Scientists say if the mission pays off, China cements its place as the leader in space exploration. Experts say two Long March 5 rockets will be used for the Tianwen-3 lander-ascender combination and the orbital return module combination. Multi-point surface scooping, fixed-point deep drilling, and rover-based sampling methods will be implemented once the spacecraft lands on Mars.
The technologies being used for the Mars mission include parts of the Chang'e 5 and Chang'e 6 Moon sample return missions and the Tianwen-1 Mars landing mission. Robotic exploration of Mars started in the 1960s. The US and China are the only two countries to have touched down on the planet's surface, though neither has yet brought back rock samples. China or the US, who will be the first to get their hands on the rock from Mars?
