“Chutiya hai kya?” (You are an asshole), yelled the driver in the car passing by us on an Indian road when I told my brother to follow the rules, keep the gaps, and drive in an organized way, so we could at least play our part in the chaos. This was the time I was in India after spending three years in the US, and I was a big fan of making small difference on your own, to make a wholesome change.

My parents always stressed on saving water and electricity as much as possible. Not because they couldn’t afford, but because there is nothing worse than wasting resources for no reason. At the same time, I grew up watching the people in the neighborhood ‘watering’ the street for hours, not only wasting water, but also flooding the streets; wasting water for hours after their tanks are full, we had to knock on their doors once every week on an average to tell them they got to switch off the pumps, before we saw the water wastage for hours. I have seen people not buzz even once before taking down a perfectly green huge tree just because they wanted to make a bigger terrace. They even start fighting if we try to suggest anything around it.

I literally teared up every time I saw cops beating up an old man or some weak street vendor, who was working hard for hours in the June sun, but couldn’t make enough to ‘pay’ them. And I can’t change it, so I would better like to not live in such community, so blatantly discarding human values.

Example, when I get in a cab I ask where the seat belt is or why the driver is using high beam on a crowded well lit city street. Agreed. I try to follow rules. And it's not that difficult amidst many people who don't. We may initially get a feeling that we are at loss(by getting delayed on roads as compared to others who drive without civic sense) but what I realize is, that's insignificant. I largely stick to my principles of following rules and I rarely find myself in disadvantageous position or a subject of mockery; even if I am, I don't care.

Most of farmers today are well versed with information and they do know at what rate vegetables are getting sold to end user. They negotiate hard with middle man and many actually sell their products directly to end users. They use pesticides and many other illegal stuff knowingly to have more profit.

Recently, after 65 years of independence, after ignoring spit (and urine) on every corner, footpath and road, the Maharashtra govt has finally woken up to prohibit spitting. Unfortunately, they are only using the whip - Rs 1000 for the first offence, 2 and 3,000 progressively. Instead they could have educated before the situation became so bad. They could have instilled pride in oneself and in a clean country. And let’s be honest, they could have provided 24/7 water to everyone and not just to sugar barons. Hope they do something about the garbage menace, next.

Whenever I have to stand in line to recharge my metro card, people from behind will PUSH you as if it will make things done faster. Every fucking time .Forget about making some space to stand

Looks like US rules in Police brutality also. Just that you would close your eyes and trust if that US poilce. And In India even if the police is punishing the right person, its brutality.they are not always beating up vendors coz they did not pay. SOmetimes, govt rules against vendors on a specific road. These vendors, being poor still go there. Its wrong, but police does have to use force to not let them stay. If they stop, you would complain that India is dirty and there are street vendors everywhere. Soon, you will see vendors in and around Taj Mahal without control. I am sure you will love that sight and complain that India cannot maintain the beauty of Taj.

This is another problem I see a lot in India. The question seeks to answer why some citizens of India leave the country. It is not USA vs India. Making yourself feel better saying the US is not perfect either is just denial. It is about bettering India, we should probably stick to that.
