To be honest, China has a coastal line longer than 18,000KM, and there are hundreds of beaches spread out the coastal line, from Dalian on the North, down to Hainan on the tropical area. The sun is not the same everywhere, I would say people in the Northern city like sun more than the people in the South, because the sun is way much stronger in the South and very easy to get sun burned, especially in the summer. Qing Dao is a bit North. By the way, so far you lovely couple have been visiting mostly the major tourism cities, I hope maybe in the future you have plan to travel to the middle or small size coastal cities, which might have a lot more tanned people on the beach.

In 1897, Germany occupied Qingdao with its fleet. In 1914, after World War I, Japan took advantage of its geographical position to defeat the German garrison in Qingdao and occupied the city. Tsingtao is an old style of romanisation of the city Qingdao. It is still pronounced the same as the city even though it's romanized in the old spelling. If you look at the characters used for the name, it's the exact same characters as the city name.
