“ I, Gong Cheng De, together with Jiu Jiang Man, who are guards of the king’s tomb, hereby fishing on order of the king, sends our regards to future generations!”
The 19 characters in Chinese , is a stone inscxtion which was forgotten after writing for next 2200 years until 1937, when a farmer in China founded and brought it home to be used as a tool.
The archaeologists brought it to Hebei Museum in 1970s where it sits today.
After research, the text was deciphered, and the king refers to head of the Zhongshan State , who reigned between 309BC to 296BC,the State is one of the five medium states in terms of military strength during the Warring States period, located in the mountain area between modern-day Hebei and Shanxi provinces.

It's like a 2,300-year-old time capsule. Its original artifact has never been exhibited.
We got your message bro.

Simply incredible.

Yes, China is widely recognized as a country with a remarkably rich and diverse culture, boasting a long history dating back thousands of years.
hi gong cheng de :) i hope the fish were biting
GONG CHENG DE!! YOUR MESSAGE HAS BEEN RECEIVED. THE FUTURE IS A STRANGE PLACE BUT IM SURE YOUR PRESENT WAS STRANGE ASWELL, SOMETHING NEVER CHANGE. I HOPE THE DAY YOU FISHED WAS WARM AND I HOPE YOU GOT TO EAT WAFFLES (PROBABLY NOT BUT WHO KNOWS) IN YOUR LIFE.
Gong Cheng De and Jiu Jiang Man would've loved smartphones and steamboats

Wow. How widespread was literacy in 300 BC China?
More so than in today’s USA.
Wouldn’t be surprised. We’re only 60% White these days.
It must be hard to have to sound out all the words you read and figure out a way to blame that on black people
Not just blaming blacks. Latinos are almost as bad as blacks on PISA scores, and there are way more of them.

They are guards of a king’s tomb, they are probably more learned than the average Chinese
hello people from the past, how's life. lot changed since you died.
one of my dreams to be rich enough to just travel the world and visit as many museums and libraries as possible
thank you for your message gong cheng de, hope the fishing went well
This is so cool i love humanity
we really are just homies of different times
It's intriguing me that at some point, those two were alive and existed. With their own thoughts, wishes and stories. And then they're gone. It's intriguing me that at that point of time, I do not exist. And then I existed. And just like them, I will also cease to exist.

Imaging writing a message saying "Whats good, me and my homie are security guards chilling out at the cemetary, just shooting the shit. Hope the future is treating you nice!" and in the year 4300 some dude found it and said "Been better"
do you think they ever wondered how long it would take for people to find their message. were they like "yeah i expect it to be like 2000 years in the future" or like "maybe it'll be found in 50 years" or they were just like "whenever they find it"
It's a bit simpler, but it reminds me of a note on the Hagia Sophia by a Viking that translates to 'Halvdan was here.'
These are cool asf and shows that it's like an instinct or something to do this throughout generations it's like 2000y later they find us writing shit like this too from now
Cudowna historia.
This is really beautiful and touching.

Dude was really like "Hello from me and my bro to you of the future!!" and we legit got the message 2300 years later
Hello to you too, guy from ~300BC
There's something touching about this
this made me feel something profound today and it was sorely needed
So cool. We send our regards back Gong and Jiu!
Assuming they didn’t really need to interpret any further than just reading it, it’s pretty cool how unchanged the Chinese language is

This makes me very emotional
we are all just silly little human even since 2300 years ago
China has excellent record keeping, beautiful civilization fr
I love humans. we really are all the same no matter what time in history
I have weakness for stuff like this, from Onfim's doodles to the time capsule of USSR; I legit cry seeing these letters. I don't see them as marks of blissful ignorance of the future from the past but rather a message caught in-between its destination: a future of a free mankind.
evidence continues to suggest that mankind has been chilling for millennia and that chilling is one of the most distinct characteristics of intelligent life

The original text kinda gave me flashback of having to learn how to interpret old Chinese text for my spm Chinese exam, 文言文you're not for me
This reminds me of the sense of memento mori my younger self felt when gazing into cryptic Mesopotamian writing in a museum and realising that those great civilizations were no longer with us millennia later…
I wonder if Gong Cheng De expected the rest of the world to read that.
This is so fucking cute omg

“fishing on the order of the king” sounds like the ideal job tbh.
Thank you for your kind regards Gong Cheng De and Jiu Jiang Man. Hope you caught some nice fish.
The discussions they had on that shift that led to talking about the future generations which eventually led to writing stuff must have been peak.
Would give anything to see that.
Obrigado Gong Cheng De e Jiu Jiang Man. Vocês s?o de verdade

there is something extremely touching about this story: two men writing a message on a stone, hoping that their descendants would read it
--- and their wish would be fulfilled, twenty-three centuries later
wow i wonder if they care about the slaughter of 400K++ soldiers buried alive at the time

One of the biggest reasons I love history is because when you read primary sources, a lot of time, you'll find something that feels like the person who wrote it a long time ago was speaking to you. Always good to be reminded people in history books were still ultimately humans.
It's ya boy Kongming!
Cdramaland plz write a story about Gong Cheng De and Jiu Jiang Man.
Humans being silly at times has always been a thing since day 1, I guess. I hope these two lived well despite the harsh times.
