My girlfriend has Peacock and we were able to watch the first one there. I liked it but i really want to see the sequel.

It may depend on how engaged you are with folklore, mythology, and religion in general. I am not well versed in Chinese mythology or literature, but understanding what the movie was based on ahead of time, I was pretty easily able to go “ah, this is likely some aspect of Chinese folklore” and fill in any minor gaps from there. But obviously, your mileage may vary.

I’d definitely watch it. It’ll give you better context for the characters and stuff, but also there’s a lot of Chinese mythology/folklore concepts they only lightly explain (since it’s for an audience that would be more familiar with them going in), so having the full context for everything will help a lot.
And then of course as other people are pointing out the first movie is free on YouTube. Be sure to change the audio track to Chinese in the settings though.

I watched the first movie before going to see the second. It provides more context on the background of Ne Zha and Ao Bing. But I don’t think you’ll miss too much by watching the sequel without watching the first movie.

It is showing at 7 of my local theaters. All in Mandarin with English subtitles. I guess I didn't look at that hard but I've noticed in 2025 like half the movies are in other languages

I watched it a few hours ago and I was legitimately impressed. I watched the first one on YouTube last night and found it an enjoyable kids film that had some awesome fight animation.
The sequel builds upon that and blows it out of the water. I found the characters engaging to watch and the animation is some of the best Ivee seen. In terms of scale and spectacle I genuinely think it’s unmatched. I haven’t been this wowed by a battle scene since the spectacle of the Lord of the Rings. I found the story fairly predictable but it was for the most part well executed and emotional. There is some juvenile humor in this one but it’s more restrained compared to the first. You definitely want to watch this in the theatre.

It’s a movie with fart jokes but somehow full of nuance and layers of storytelling. It has tremendous amount of heart.
In the current era where everything needs to be focus grouped, Nezha 2 is just brimming with madman energy. And visually it is just stunning.
It’s a kids movie that teaches you there is not always a good side or bad side. Hell, the first movie had a line that went hard: ‘humanity has enough prejudice to fill a mountain. Immovable no matter how hard you push against it.’
Is it a perfect movie? No. But neither are a lot of movies in the highest grossing. Freakin moana 2 and the live action Lion King is there. Does Nezha 2 beat those ones? By a far, far margin.
It reminds me of that movie like Puss in Boots (spoilers) Literal Death shows up, no holds barred, in a touching story about redemption and mortality in a children’s cartoon, but gets dismissed because it’s Puss in Boots and not quite part of our cultural palette to keep it relevant.

Does anyone know the domestic sales for Ne Zha 2 rather than the combined total of $2 billion? I really want to understand just how big the domestic market in China alone. I can find douyin comments with a hundred thousand upvotes saying Nezha is gay but that doesn't exactly make it a fact now does it? It's like if you went to an Elon Musk fanboy tiktok comment section and and tried to say it represented all of America.
No one is forcing anyone to watch Ne Zha 2, it's the people going there in droves. It's literally revitalized theaters that were going bankrupt. In some towns that didn't have enough seats, they started selling aisle tickets to sit in the aisles. Other places that didn't have enough theaters re-opened shut down ones. That's how excited people were to see it. It's driven by widespread great word of mouth and a sense of FOMO. Everyone is watching it from adults to grandmas to children to marvel like fan boys to shipper fangirls. I don't doubt that out of the 300 million+ tickets sold there may be some people who want to take the success of the movie and use it to push a patriotic agenda, but they aren't representative of the majority. That article reeks of unprofessionalism and sinophobia.
Also, people just wanted it to reach 10 billion RMB (1.3 billion usd) because it's a nice clean milestone. Even that was seen as a huge goal. No one expected it to do nearly double that.
