Giving a press conference shortly after the offers were unveiled, the prime minister said they were "final" and "one of the most significant" pay awards in decades - costing "billions of pounds more than the government had budgeted for".

He confirmed the pay awards were not going to be funded by increased borrowing or higher taxes but through other avenues - including an increase to the charge migrants have to pay when they apply for visas and to the immigration health surcharge, the levy migrants have to pay to access the NHS.

Millions of workers given real terms pay cut for 13th year in a row.
Only way to stop this would be for the government to stop greedy fuck companies profiteering. Supermarkets and energy companies profits up insane amounts? Force them to reduce them back down.
Sadly that'll never happen.
Tesco's net profit margin is a stunning 1.48%. Sainsbury's is an eye watering 0.66%. Not a lot of room to cut prices there...
Supermarkets are really not causing inflation.
Their margins are quite small, but because they sell an insane amount, they are still making huge profits.
Tescos profits were about 2.6 billion and that’s an increase since covid
All the big supermarkets have grown profit since covid, with the exception of Sainsburys
I’m not saying they are or aren’t involved with inflation, more just the fact of whether they have small margins or not, they are still doing extremely well and have billions of profit each year

It doesn’t need fixing it is still a pay rise form what they were getting
Such a small one they're still poorer than they were last year. Just not quite as poor as they would be this year without it.
They aren't asking for the number on paper to be technically higher just for the novelty. They're asking for their wages to be brought in line with the adjustment for inflation and cost of living SINCE their wages started falling below the inflation curve years and years ago.
Don't be so insulting as to trot out this nonsense "Look the number is higher on paper, what are you complaining about?" argument.
If next year I say I’m going to give you £100 extra, but also say you owe me £125, have I given you a wage rise? Technically, if you want to be pedantic about it, yes I’ve given you more than last year, but realistically, taking everything into account, I’ve actually taken an extra £25 AWAY from you.
So not only has your wage rise been cancelled out, you’re actually losing more money than you were last year… connecting the dots that means you wage hasn’t actually risen, and you’re worse off.
That’s what has been going on with doctors, nurses, teachers and so many other public sector workers for about 10 years now, perhaps even longer.
This is why people have coined the term real terms pay rise because saying “we’re giving you a pay increase” doesn’t tell the full story if 3 weeks down the line I’m going to take more money off you than your wage was ever increased by. For private employers this is largely out of their control, but for governments it is not.
A large scale country wide general strike has never been more needed than now.

Yes, it's been a growing concern amongst Civil Servants and public sector workers that there's an increasing reliance by workers even up to some higher level managerial grades on food banks.
I don't have the figures for how many, but frankly that there are any shows how much public sector pay has fallen relative to living costs that there are any at all. These jobs used to be considered fairly cushy and well respected and now they just aren't.
And this 6% pay increase doesn’t cover those civil servants, who are going to be receiving even less (although they have awarded Senior Civil Servants 5.5%, which is higher than the “up to 4.5%” for normal civil servants)
And Civil Service pay has been frozen since 2010. I've heard that in order to "recover" the "lost wages" from the pay freeze and the year on year inflation we'd need to start with a payrise of 21%.
Public sector workers, and the public at large, have been repeatedly told that we need to pay for the financial crisis, we need to pay for the fuel crisis, we need to pay for Covid, we need to pay for the Ukraine war and only then can we consider increasing public spending. But it seems pretty clear to me right now that we're never not going to be in some kind of crisis and despite that various industry bosses and politicians are still seeing profits and pay increase for year after year.
I've said it on Reddit previously but the Conservative message has changed from "We will make things better" to "We will restore normal affairs" to "we'll stop things getting worse" and now we're at a stage which is basically "Things will probably keep getting worse but under Labour they would get worse faster". It's going to be a really inspiring election year next year with those kinds of messages.
The funding for this is completely fucked. Cranking up the visa fees and IHS fees again is cruel, and pointless.
My partner has lived in the UK since their early 20s. The vast majority of tax she's paid in her life, has gone to the UK government. We're up for our final visa (ILR) in January. Thankfully, since it's ILR, we don't need to pay the IHS again, but I'm concerned at how much they're going to increase the visa fees by.
Not to mention that, since Australia has a reciprocal healthcare agreement with the UK, she shouldn't even need to pay to use the NHS to begin with, but tories gonna tory.
Also, my generation isn't really having kids. We have an ageing population. Who the fuck is going to look after all these pensioners when they go into care homes when they've voted for parties that make immigration impractical? Who is going to staff the NHS? You'd be absolutely mental to go and study nursing or medicine in the UK just now.
So after dragging this nonsense out for 6 months or more, saying there will be no pay rises above 3%, they now agree to a payrise of far beyond that.
These guys are the ultimate abusive employers.
Never mind that they have strangled the pay of these workers over a decade until they are forced to strike, then when inflation goes through the roof due to tory greed, they still refuse to pay people enough to survive and far less than is needed to ensure we have a public service.
The tories will be okay, they don't use our public services, but you can bet they haven't even bothered to consider what happens when there is no NHS or police or fire service, etc.
Genuine question. The UK is (meant to be) one of the biggest economies in the world.
How have things got this fucked up?
My understanding of it is, it’s because the tories funded tax cuts, pension rises and pandemic spending by electronically adding a few noughts onto the uk’s bank account and by borrowing billions from foreign banks. The uk runs on a deficit because we simply don’t pay enough in taxes or sell enough goods and services to other countries to fund what the govt spends. The tories would always want to lower taxes and cut public services, that’s their whole reason for existing, but they’d have to borrow lots more money to do it.
Additionally, the uk’s credit rating was bumped down not once but twice immediately after Brexit was voted for. So we’re paying off all that debt not only at current inflationary rates of interest but also with penalties for being more of a risk to lend to. So there’s nothing in the pot for public services, which suits the tories in any case.
And the only way to keep it all in some sort of balance is if the Bank of England makes conditions recession-like for 2/3rds of the population, stopping people from spending money. If ordinary people earn and therefore spend too much money right now, we’ll go into an inflationary spiral and real recession which which will stand a real chance of wiping out big businesses, not just small or weak ones as is the case now.
So if you want my answer it’s because we’ve been run by tories with the wrong ideological policies which were never suited to deal with the biggest drain on the uk’s bank balance - covid and Brexit. As it is, the tories can’t even Tory right now because tax cuts would send the country into recession. Remember Truss? The only trick they have left in the bag is to make most people poorer.
I’m not an economist, but surely investing in public services, infrastructure, wages, training, provisions - all boost the economy rather than screw it over.
Public sector money increases government value. A % of Money spent comes back from tax, spend, contracts, and it betters the “safety net” for private sector where we can push global economy. Increase in government value surely boosts confidence with the markets and then we have growth, stopping all this BS about having to dig deep in our pockets to find money to pay for things like bank interest rises.
Refusing to fund public sector hurts everyone
In summary, - still a real time pay cut - that includes taking money from these always struggling services to do that - saying it’s one of the most significant pay awards in decades when it is essentially wage theft being a little less bad
I hope they keep on striking.
Actually more than that, I hope one day someone passes a law that forces politicians to use only public services (no private health or private schooling for kids) so they start managing them properly.
Millions are getting pay rises from existing funds that are allocated elsewhere. So thousands of temp workers will not get work any more to save on costs, people won’t be replace when they are retired out/leave for better opportunities in the private sector, and the remaining people will be left with the additional workload of all of the people who are no longer employed. So their 6% pay rise will be to cover the 20% extra work they need to do - still at a real time cut of around 3-5% due to inflation.
