“Just asking nicely clearly doesn’t work with Trump, so we have to stand tall with our allies in Canada and Europe and show that we will not be bullied. Time to start boycotting US products and we should also be introducing retaliatory tarrifs. Remove the subsidies on Tesla for a start
Well i dont pay for it and there isn’t really a viable alternative so thats a no from me, stopped buying coke, amazon products, cancelled netflix and disney, stopped buying american clothes, i work for them a fair bit though, not giving that up!
The UK needs to sort out its own payment and credit card systems asap. Every single online payment has a tax on it that goes to the Americans. This would be far more damaging than simply boycotting businesses they can shuffle about and cook the books with.
The UK needs to sort out its own payment and credit card systems asap
Yes, but I think this would be better done in partnership with other countries, EU, Canada, Japan, as many as possible, because it will attract a reaction, and there is perhaps more safety in numbers.

You already have tarrifs placed on the US for a long while now.
Yes every country in the world has tariffs placed on products from countries it’s not in an FTA with. Trump tariffs are a) far higher across the board, the average tariff is about 3% these are generally 25% b) also placed on products that every other nation on earth follows international agreements like the UN technology agreement to make 0% tariff globally.
It’s not remotely equivalent.
Thats not true even canada has tariffs on the US for 225%+ on certain things. Why is it fair for other countries to tarrif except for the US?
It’s entirely true. Yes some things like automobiles, steel and baseball gloves in the USA (genuinely) are very heavily tariffed, a lot of HS codes are zero globally or 1-3%. It averages out at about 3% on total value of imports globally I seem to recall. Tariffs on nearly about 99.9% of Chinese goods in the USA are currently at least 27.5%. On “Independence day” it looks like that will be pretty much the same for a lot of countries. It’s a huge escalation of tariffs.
Brexit was a stupid short sighted idea anyway. Lets cut our loses and get back in, with whatever penalties we deserve. America is not something I think any of us want to rely on in any way, shape or form. Europe as a whole need to band together and strengthen our defenses. I'll say it until I'm blue in the face, legalising and taxing recreational cannabis would generate billions for any country or city smart enough to implement it. This has been shown in every example of people doing it, look at California, Colorada, Netherlands, Thailand, Barcelona. There's no examples of this being a bad thing to happen to a city, and the money can be split between the NHS and military defenses while at the same time generating thousands of jobs and freeing up police time and spending. It's a no brainer. Cannabis culture is huge in the UK more than most would like to admit, and all that money is going to "criminals". Time to get with the times and make smart choices, stop trying to impose more control on a society that is only going to push back against it. We'd love to fight for a country we believe in, start there.
Trumps proposals are the biggest threat to world peace in the last 60 years. Greenland, Panama, Mexico, Canada and multiple other ridiculous plans. why does the UK have a 10% tariff on US cars if tariffs are so bad?

Most tariffs are reciprocal and are agreed in trade deals to protect domestic production. Here's a good example of a tariff that worked.
The US' dairy industry is designed in a way that means the final product in supermarkets is cheap, so the population can buy it freely, and farmers are subsidised by the government to make their money. In Canada, it's the inverse, and dairy farms aren't subsided, so dairy products are more expensive in the supermarkets. If Canada didn't have tariffs on American dairy, then US manufacturers would be able to undercut the market, and a huge source of industry in Canada would fail and require bailouts. Dairy imported to Canada from the US is tariffed to bring prices in line with the typical market.
Likewise for why we impose tariffs on US imported cars. Our manufacturing capabilities don't match the US, so we impose tariffs on these products so companies like Jaguar Land Rover don't go bump. BYD cars from China are tariffed to the eyeballs so billions of pounds of R&D from UK car manufacturers isn't completely wasted.
Tariffs on their own aren't necessarily a terrible thing. Trump's tariffs are because he doesn't seem to understand how they work or why they exist. He's going to cause a global recession placing tariffs on countries he takes personal issue with.
So he wants us to pay our share for NATO, but also wants us to suffer economically making that harder?
Obviously he’d be happy is social services and the NHS collapsed.
But I’d rather we took economic damage than see our government kiss the ring
Trump's plan to tariff everyone are literally just going to hurt Americans more than anyone else.
Yeah they are gonna be suffering from all that extra cash. They are a sensible way of bringing more money to the US no matter what Reddit tells you. Could they go badly for America? Yes, but it's incredibly unlikely

Americans pay the tariffs, so there’s no ‘extra cash’.
That's short term. The purpose of the tariffs is to bring business to the US. And it's gonna work no matter what you read online
what looney toons world do you live in where antagonising your trade partners will make them more likely to do business with you?
The only thing brought to the US is going to be higher prices.
